Customs of the End of the War Day
Every year on August 15th, the day of the end of the war, we make "luxury suiton."
When I was a child, my maternal grandparents told me about their experiences during the war, and I watched TV programs that were animated during the war.
It was a custom to eat luxurious sujebi using vegetables, meat and eggs that were too different from sujebi during the war.
My grandfather worked in a factory that made weapons as a student labor mobilization, and my grandmother took care of severely injured soldiers as an apprentice nurse. I remember a story that I hid in the army with doctors because there was not enough distribution and grew sweet potatoes in the courtyard and boiled and ate vines in the tarai that I protected from the metal recovery order.
After I got married and became a mother, the custom of telling children the stories I heard from my grandparents and having luxurious sujebi with my family continues even now that the children are in their 20s.
My father-in-law born in 1946 seems to be not good at sujebi, but the rest of the family is rather a luxurious sujebi lover, so I sometimes make it other than the day of the end of the war
This year, my grandmother (mother-in-law) who lives with me for the first time made it! It was delicious.
Even though prices are high, it is safe to live and eat three meals every day
Because it is peace.

終戦の日の贅沢すいとんという伝統は、まさに家族の歴史と思い出が詰まった特別な食文化です。私自身も平和のありがたみを感じるために、毎年この日に特別な料理を作ることを習慣にしています。戦時中の食べ物が制限されていたことを聞くと、現在の豊かな食生活がどれほど恵まれているかを改めて実感します。 贅沢すいとんにはたっぷりの野菜やお肉、卵が入っていて、その豊かさは戦時中のすいとんとはまったく異なります。見習い看護婦や学徒勤労動員として過酷な経験をされた祖父母の話は、食卓に平和の尊さを伝える大切なメッセージになっています。また、配給不足の中でさつまいもを育てたり、金属回収から守るためにタライを使うなどの工夫も、家族の連帯感や生命力を感じさせます。 私たちの家族でも終戦の日にはこうした歴史と共に、特製のすいとんを囲みながら、平和の尊さや過去の苦労を語り合います。物価高騰が続く現代でも三食安心して食べられることは、決して当たり前ではありません。この習慣を通じて、子供たちにも平和の大切さを伝え、戦争のない未来を願う気持ちが育まれています。 家族の中で料理が苦手な人もいますが、それでも贅沢すいとんは好評で、時折普段の食卓にも登場します。さらに、同居する義母が初めて作ってくれた年もあり、その美味しさがまた次世代へ伝わるきっかけになりました。こうして小さな家庭の伝統が、世代を越えて続いていくことに喜びを感じています。 終戦の日に食べる贅沢すいとんは、単なる料理ではなく、家族の歴史、平和への願い、そして今を生きる幸せを実感する大切な行事です。皆さんもぜひ、大切な日にはご家族や友人と共に、平和を考えながら味わってみてはいかがでしょうか。
