MGS V - Big Boss & DD

I’m a huge metal gear fan! It’s been a huge part of my gaming life and probably one of my favorite franchises. Hideo Kojima to me is the goat 🐐.

I remember bringing this idea up with the homie @calejaylabbe back in 2021 and I couldn’t be happier. Hand drawn and colored on paper and then digitally scanned to bring it to life and give it its unique look and feel. Only available here at Noru. Link in bio or www.noru.supply 😉

When I decided to bring Big Boss and DD to life in my own style, it wasn't just about drawing characters; it was about capturing the essence of their story and the incredible world Hideo Kojima built. People often ask me what makes Big Boss such a compelling subject for art. For me, it's his complex character – the legendary soldier, the tragic hero, the icon of survival. His rugged features, the iconic eye patch, and that silent strength make him instantly recognizable and a joy to interpret. And DD? He's the perfect loyal companion, adding a layer of warmth and ferocity that complements Big Boss perfectly. My process for this piece, as you know, started with good old-fashioned pen and paper. There's something incredibly satisfying about the tactile feel of traditional art. I spent hours studying game stills and concept art to get the details just right – from Big Boss's bionic arm to the texture of DD's fur. Getting the proportions and expressions right for both characters was a fun challenge. After the hand-drawing and coloring were complete, the magic really happened when I scanned it digitally. This step allowed me to refine the colors, add subtle shading, and give it that crisp, unique finish you see. It's like bridging the gap between classic artistry and modern presentation, which I think really makes the artwork pop, especially for fans who appreciate both traditional and digital aesthetics. For any fellow MGS fans or aspiring artists out there who want to try drawing Big Boss or other characters, my biggest tip is to really immerse yourself in the source material. Watch cutscenes, analyze character designs, and understand the emotional context. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles – whether you prefer a more realistic approach, a comic book feel, or something completely abstract. The beauty of fan art is that it's your personal interpretation. Consider how the character's environment or their iconic poses can tell a story within your drawing. Capturing that feeling of 'METAL GEAR SOLID' isn't just about accuracy; it's about conveying the spirit of the game. This piece, like much of my work, aims to blend my passion for gaming with my artistic vision, creating something that feels both nostalgic and fresh. You can see how the 'BOUT BY NORU' style comes through in the bold lines and dynamic composition. I love seeing how the MGS aesthetic, with its military precision and gritty realism, has even influenced modern streetwear and fashion trends. This artwork, with its strong visual identity, definitely feels at home in that space. It's more than just a drawing; it's a piece of my gaming history brought to life through art, and I hope it resonates with other fans as much as creating it resonated with me.
