History of the Erawan Elephant
The Erawan elephant (read as A-Ra-Wan) is an important elephant in Indian literature and mythology, especially in Brahman-Hinduism and Buddhism, considered the majestic vehicle of Indra (or Vrun in some texts), the god of lightning and rain, ruler of the Devas-class paradise.
Origin and characteristics:
Birth: According to legend, the elephant Erawan was born from an ocean of milk when angels and demons together stirred up the ocean, to create the elixir; or some texts say it was the son of Kashrapa and Mrs. Kathru, or was born from a rain cloud, symbolizing fertility and the bringing of rain.
Physical characteristics: The Erawan elephant has a distinctive and exquisite appearance.
Heads: There are 33 heads (some texts, 3 heads, or 33,000 heads), but the most popular and well-known is 33 heads, which is believed to be the same number as the 33 angels in the Celestial Paradise.
Sesame: Each head has 7 tusks (some 2 textbooks), for a total of 231 tusks (7x33).
Lotus pool: Each sesame has seven lotus pools.

Angels: Each lobe has seven fairies.
Jewelry: The Erawan elephant is often depicted as having a pure white, snow-like body, or silver, adorned with spectacular gold and jewels.

In Thailand, the eravan elephant is important and widely known. The image of the eravan elephant, 33 heads, often appears in murals in monasteries, sculptures, including emblems.
One of the greatest and most famous Erawan elephant sculptures in Thailand is the Erawan Elephant Museum, Samut Prakan Province, a three-headed colossal statue of the Erawan elephant, created as a museum to exhibit antiquities and artworks reflecting beliefs and ideals.

ช้างเอราวัณไม่เพียงแต่เป็นตัวละครในตำนานเท่านั้น แต่ยังสะท้อนถึงความเชื่อและประเพณีของไทยที่สืบต่อกันมาหลายชั่วอายุคน สำหรับคนไทยหลายคน ผมเองก็รู้สึกทึ่งเมื่อได้เห็นรูปปั้นช้างเอราวัณสามเศียรขนาดใหญ่ที่ประดับอย่างวิจิตร ซึ่งมักตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ตามวัดวาอารามหรือพิพิธภัณฑ์ต่างๆ เช่นในจังหวัดสมุทรปราการ ที่มีพิพิธภัณฑ์ช้างเอราวัณขนาดมหึมา ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำท่ามกลางธรรมชาติยามสนธยา เสมือนเป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่แสดงถึงความศักดิ์สิทธิ์และความสง่างามของช้างในตำนานนี้ เมื่อพูดถึงลักษณะของช้างเอราวัณ หลายคนอาจสงสัยว่าทำไมช้างถึงมีมากกว่าหนึ่งเศียร ซึ่งตามตำนานนั้นมีถึง 33 เศียร โดยแต่ละเศียรมีงาจำนวนมากที่ประดับด้วยลวดลายซับซ้อนและสระบัว อีกทั้งยังเป็นพาหนะของพระอินทร์ที่ช่วยให้เทพเจ้าสามารถเสด็จลงมายังมนุษย์และสรรพสัตว์ได้อย่างสง่างามและทรงพลัง ผมได้ศึกษาแล้วพบว่าความเชื่อนี้แสดงถึงความอุดมสมบูรณ์และน้ำฝนที่เป็นประโยชน์กับพืชผลและชีวิตผู้คนในสังคมไทยมาตลอด ในฐานะที่ช้างเอราวัณปรากฏในงานศิลปะและสถาปัตยกรรมต่างๆ มากมาย จึงไม่แปลกใจที่คนไทยหลายๆ คนยังคงเคารพและนับถือในความเชื่อที่เกี่ยวข้องกับช้างเอราวัณ นอกจากนี้ การนำเรื่องเล่าของช้างเอราวัณมาใช้ในภาพยนตร์การ์ตูนหรืองานศิลปะสมัยใหม่ ก็ช่วยทำให้ตำนานนี้ยังคงเป็นที่รู้จักและมีชีวิตชีวาสำหรับคนรุ่นใหม่ได้อย่างต่อเนื่อง
