My hair journey has been just that… a JOURNEY!!! Currently I’ve been natural since 2016. I did my big chop December 7, 2016 and since then I’ve been trying to grow my hair bra strap length (mid back).
I do not do my own hair. I was going to an older lady as a stylist first but realized she could not properly care for my hair. No shade but permed her was just her thing. I switched over to a natural hair stylist.
I’ve been severely depressed since 2020. Recently diagnosed with depression, severe anemia, critical vitamin D deficiency, and anxiety but I’ve been living with that 😂
THERAPY! Shadow work, healing, SLEEP/REST!, Vitamin D once a week, iron replacement, OLAPLEX treatments, and protein (iron) hair treatments. Produced this flexi rod set that you see today. I’ll upload my silk press I recently had (style before this, 4 weeks last time) at a later time.
Xoxo 💋

... Read moreMy journey to healthy, defined curls has taught me so much, especially how deeply connected our physical well-being is to our hair. When I was struggling with depression and vitamin deficiencies, my hair suffered. It wasn't just about putting products on it; it was about nourishing my body and mind from within. This 'Mental Awareness = Healthy Hair' philosophy truly changed everything for me. Taking care of my mental health through therapy, ensuring I got enough sleep, and addressing nutrient deficiencies like iron and vitamin D directly translated into more vibrant, thriving curly hair. It's a holistic approach that I believe every curlygurly should consider.
If you're eyeing those perfectly defined curls from a flexi rod set, let me share a few extra tips I've picked up. Achieving that stunning close-up definition isn't just about the rods themselves. First, start with clean, deeply conditioned hair. A good leave-in conditioner is crucial for slip and moisture. Next, ensure your hair is damp, not soaking wet, before applying a setting lotion or foam. Sectioning is key – smaller sections generally give more definition. When wrapping your hair around the flexi rods, make sure the ends are smooth and securely tucked in to avoid frizz. Patience is a virtue here; allow your hair to air dry completely, or use a hooded dryer on a low setting. Rushing it will compromise your curl definition! Once dry, gently unravel the rods and separate your curls carefully with a light oil on your fingertips to prevent frizz and add shine. This method has given me some of my absolute best healthy defined curls close up.
Beyond the flexi rods, maintaining healthy hair for us curly girls is an ongoing process. I found that a consistent wash day routine is non-negotiable. This includes clarifying periodically, a moisturizing shampoo, and a rich deep conditioner. Weekly deep conditioning treatments, especially those with protein like the treatments I mentioned, can significantly strengthen your curls and prevent breakage, leading to better definition. Don't forget your scalp health too – a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth. Massaging your scalp regularly can stimulate blood flow.
Embracing the 'Soft Girl' aesthetic isn't just about fashion; it extends to how we care for ourselves and our hair. It’s about being gentle, nurturing, and celebrating our natural beauty. For me, this means wearing protective styles when needed, avoiding excessive heat, and being kind to my strands. Finding a community of fellow curlygurly enthusiasts has also been incredibly uplifting. We share tips, celebrate successes, and offer support through our unique hair journeys. Remember, your hair is an extension of you, and treating it with love and care, both inside and out, will always yield the most beautiful results. It's truly empowering to see your hair flourish when you prioritize your overall well-being.
