Nurse practitioner jobs you didn’t know existed
When I went to nurse practitioner school, I was taught that I could either work in a clinic or at a hospital. They don’t really focus on much beyond that. To my surprise, there is a WHOLE world out there beyond clinical or patient-facing roles. Here are some that I love:
1️⃣Clinical Science Liaison: obviously this is number one because this is what I did in biotech! Here’s why I love it. In this role you typically have your foot in 2 major operations within the company. You’re helping to run clinical research trials (this is a huge operation and such a great skillset to have) and building partnerships with physicians and experts (also know as key opinion leaders or thought leaders). If you can start in this role like I did, I would highly recommend! It gives you the opportunity to transition to a variety of roles in clinical research AND in medical affairs.
2️⃣Medical Science Liaison: this is within the department of medical affairs. In this role you’re primarily building connections with those physician experts I mentioned above and facilitating scientific conversation around the product that the company has built. (This product could be a medical device or a drug etc)
3️⃣Clinical Nurse Educator: This role is great for nurses and nurse practitioners. Exactly as the title says, this person is educating on the clinical aspects of the product that the company built. You could be training patients, healthcare providers, organizations, etc!
Have you ever heard of any of these roles?

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, many nurse practitioners (NPs) are discovering alternative career paths that leverage their clinical expertise in innovative roles. Positions such as Clinical Science Liaison allow NPs to immerse themselves in the world of clinical research, forming key partnerships with physicians while supporting drug and medical device development. This not only enhances the role of NPs but also extends their influence in healthcare. Another exciting career prospect is that of a Medical Science Liaison, where NPs bridge the gap between pharmaceutical companies and the medical community. This role involves engaging scientists and healthcare providers in meaningful dialogues about products and technologies, ensuring that scientific information is effectively communicated and utilized in patient care. The role of Clinical Nurse Educator also opens doors for NPs interested in training other healthcare professionals and patients. It emphasizes education and support for new clinical practices and products, further establishing NPs as trusted knowledge leaders in various healthcare settings. These alternative roles often offer a chance for professional growth while contributing significantly to patient care and clinical outcomes. As more NPs explore these dynamic positions, the opportunities for career advancement and personal fulfillment in nursing are increasingly appealing.
