What I say to sound confident in corporate America

As a 35 year old nurse practitioner who now works in corporate America, here’s some phrases I’ve had to replace in my daily speak to sound more confident and be taken more seriously!

1. “Sorry to bother you.” ➡️ “when you have a moment…”

Apologize only where it’s actually needed. So often I used to jump to this thinking it made me sound polite but in reality it shows that I lack confidence or assertiveness. Instead of undermining my question before I even start, I have tried to consciously replace this phrase with something that still sounds respectful of someone else’s time but with a strong backbone!

2. “Does that make sense?”➡️”let me know if you’d love more detail”

This one is tough! But this basically just shows that you think you didn’t explain something well enough. Instead, I’ve been training myself to imply that the explanation was appropriate but just follow with an opportunity for them to ask questions and clarify if needed.

3. “ I could be wrong but…” ➡️ “In my experience…”

Giving credibility to you experience is huge. I remind myself that I have expertise and valuable thoughts to offer which is why I am a part of the conversation to begin with! There is no need to pretend that I don’t have something insightful to offer so replacing it with a statement that shows what your experience has taught you can be super helpful to your team! I’m getting better at this through the years.

What are some phrases you have cut out or replaced to sound more confident at work?

... Read moreIn the competitive landscape of corporate America, effective communication is pivotal. Many professionals, particularly women, often find themselves using phrases that unintentionally undermine their confidence. For instance, substituting ‘Sorry to bother you’ with ‘When you have a moment’ demonstrates respect while affirming one’s presence in the conversation. Similarly, instead of asking ‘Does that make sense?’ try saying ‘Let me know if you’d love more detail.’ This not only affirms your explanation but also invites constructive dialogue. Furthermore, replacing ‘I could be wrong but…’ with ‘In my experience…’ shifts the focus towards your expertise, highlighting your valuable contributions. It’s crucial to remember that language shapes perception and confidence. Therefore, adopting these empowering phrases can significantly impact workplace dynamics and personal growth. By using assertive language, you enhance your professional image, show strength, and facilitate a more engaging work environment. Explore other phrases that can transform your workplace communication and foster a culture of assertiveness among colleagues. What phrases have you adopted to exude confidence in your career journey? Share your insights and continue to build a supportive community.

What to Say at Work Instead of Apologizing💅🏼
Listen, don’t misunderstand me- if you act up or are rude or say something in the best of the moment, etc, then definitely apologize. However, as women, we apologize way too much at work. Truth is, most things we say sorry about don’t need an apology! Stop the inner dialogue and guilt already!
