Nuclear energy, however, sits at an interesting intersection. Unlike solar and wind, nuclear power uses uranium and other radioactive materials to generate energy. While nuclear fuel is finite, the process of radioactive decay in uranium, thorium, and potassium occurs over billions of years, providing a long-lasting energy source. According to Robert B. Hayes, PhD, Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Fellow of the Health Physics and American Physical Societies, much of geothermal energy also depends on the radioactive decay of primordial elements like uranium, thorium, and potassium found naturally in the earth’s crust. This scientific insight influences the debate around nuclear energy’s renewability. While nuclear fuel sources are technically nonrenewable in the human timeframe, their longevity and low carbon emissions make nuclear power a valuable sustainable energy option. Additionally, advances in nuclear technology, such as breeder reactors and potential fusion energy, may extend fuel supplies and reduce waste. In contrast, solar energy's renewability is driven directly by the sun, which is expected to continue producing energy for about 5 billion more years. This permanence, combined with minimal environmental impact during operation, secures its status as a clean, renewable resource. Understanding these nuances helps clarify why some experts consider nuclear energy a form of low-carbon sustainable energy despite its complexities, whereas solar energy remains a leading example of true renewable power. Both play essential roles in the global transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy systems, critical for addressing climate change and energy security.
