Hexed x Emily McIntire
Another fun and final (?) installment to the Never After Series, Emily McIntire has done it again! Our Villain, Venesa is so horribly lovable even though she’d never believe it, and Enzo is her perfect match. Aria can rot for all I care and so can Uncle T and Carlos.
This wonderful fractured retelling of The Little Mermaid is chock full of Easter eggs and twists to the original and pop stories. Finding them all was a blast! And that’s not even touching on the story!
Venesa is her uncle’s go to for getting her hands dirty, or so she thinks, and her cousin, Aria, is his perfect little princess, only she doesn’t really deserve it. Enzo is the underboss for the mob, engaged to Aria, and has his whole life planned for him, but things aren’t quite what they seem.
I fully enjoyed this tale and it was made so much better by getting the opportunity to buddy read with a wonderful group of ladies!

Many readers wonder, "What is Hexed by Emily McIntire based on?" Well, it's a deliciously dark and fractured retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid,' but with a mature, mafia twist. Forget sweet Ariel; this story introduces you to Venesa, a complex 'Female Villain' who is far from traditional princesses. It's a fantastic continuation of the 'Never After Series' that fans have come to love. Now, let's talk about the captivating characters, Venesa and Enzo. The original review hinted at them being a 'perfect match,' and I couldn't agree more. Venesa embodies the 'Antihero' trope perfectly. She's fierce, morally grey, and driven by a past that shapes her every move. Enzo, on the other hand, is her 'He Falls' counterpart, drawn to her despite (or because of) her dangerous edges. Their dynamic is built on 'Forbidden Romance' and 'Forced Proximity,' making their connection electric. This isn't your typical love story; it's a battle of wills wrapped in passionate tension. For those new to Emily McIntire's work or curious about the "hexed book series," 'Hexed' is a thrilling installment in her 'Never After' series, each book offering a standalone, dark retelling of a classic fairy tale. This context helps explain the underlying themes and expectations for the book. The 'Mafia Romance' aspect is central to 'Hexed.' It adds an intense layer of danger and power struggles that elevate the narrative beyond a simple retelling. The 'Tropes' are abundant and well-executed – from the forbidden love to the morally grey characters, it's a feast for dark romance enthusiasts. Without giving away too much of the "hexed summary," expect intricate plot twists, a high level of spice (my 4/5 spice rating stands!), and characters you'll both root for and question. The story delves into family loyalties, betrayal, and the quest for identity. If you're looking for a book that challenges your perceptions of villains and heroes, and you're intrigued by the idea of an 'Antihero' finding their match, then 'Hexed' is absolutely worth picking up. It's truly a unique take that will keep you guessing until the very end, and I personally loved finding all the Easter eggs!
