Never After 🩷 series REVIEW 📚

This series was… insane. SWIPE to see my star rating for each book ☺️

When I read this I was just getting into romance/dark romance, so I thought this series would be a great dip into it. At the recommendation of a friend, I took the plunge and WOW. It took me on such a ride. These books are “fractured fairy tales inspired by our favorite villains”. The stories are loosely inspired by villains from classic stories, including, Peter Pan, The Lion King, The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Little Mermaid.

In my opinion, the series as a whole is a solid 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and spice is 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (quite explicit, nothing too wild, but some books were spicier than others, and the actual plots of the books are soooo good)

I found that the books got better and better as it progressed, with Hexed being the longest book, most intense, most emotional, and BEST. I would say if I had to rank them, best to worst it’d be straight down the line, newest to oldest. The first few are still very good though!! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES!!!

... Read moreWhen I first started diving into the world of dark romance, everyone kept talking about Emily McIntire’s Never After series. And let me tell you, the hype is absolutely real! As someone who loves a good villain and a story with a serious edge, this series completely captivated me. It’s a brilliant collection of fractured fairy tales, taking those beloved (or sometimes feared) characters we grew up with and giving them a deliciously dark twist. Think Peter Pan, the Lion King, The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Little Mermaid, but reimagined with morally grey protagonists, intense chemistry, and plots that will keep you guessing. So, is the Never After series truly dark romance? Absolutely! If you’re looking for stories that push boundaries, explore complex relationships, and feature characters who are far from your typical heroes, you’ve found your next read. The spice level is definitely present – I'd rate it around a 3 out of 5 on the heat scale – but it’s always integral to the plot and character development, not just there for shock value. The darkness isn't just for show; it delves into the psychology of villains and explores the complexities of good versus evil in a way that feels fresh and exciting. It’s an immersive experience that doesn’t shy away from mature themes and intense situations, making it a perfect fit for fans of the genre. For anyone wondering about the best way to tackle this series, reading Emily McIntire's Never After books in order is highly recommended to fully appreciate the progression and world-building. Here’s the lineup I followed: Hooked (Peter Pan retelling): This is where it all begins. A truly captivating start to the series, introducing the dark undertones right away. Scarred (The Lion King retelling): A powerful and emotional read that really showcases McIntire's ability to craft complex characters. Wretched (The Wizard of Oz retelling): This one really picked up the pace for me, delving into even deeper psychological aspects. Twisted (Aladdin retelling): A standout for its unique take and a certain character’s journey that left a strong impression. This book definitely leaned into the 'dark romance twisted series' vibe. Crossed (The Hunchback of Notre Dame retelling): An incredibly intense and emotionally charged installment that resonated deeply. Hexed (The Little Mermaid retelling): Oh, Hexed! This was, for me, the absolute pinnacle of the series. It was the longest, most intense, and emotionally gripping book, truly unforgettable. The growth and payoff in this one were just incredible. Each book, while standalone in its main romance, builds on the overall atmosphere and understanding of this fractured fairy tale universe. You'll find yourself rooting for characters you never thought you would and questioning everything you thought you knew about these classic tales. The way McIntire weaves in familiar elements while creating something entirely new is pure genius. If you’re like me and love a story that makes you feel deeply and challenges your perceptions, then trust me, you need to pick up this series. It’s an absolute journey that I wholeheartedly recommend to any dark romance enthusiast looking for their next obsession.
