🩺 EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WORKING IN SURGERY?

If you’re a nursing student, new grad, or RN wondering what it’s like to become a surgical nurse, the operating room is a completely different world of nursing—and that’s exactly what I love about it. 🏥✨

Intraoperative nursing is about SO much more than being in the room during surgery.

As an OR nurse, you may be responsible for:

✨ Patient identification & safety

✨ Surgical time-outs

✨ Positioning & protecting the patient

✨ Maintaining sterile technique

✨ Surgical counts

✨ Managing supplies & equipment

✨ Documentation

✨ Communicating with anesthesia, surgeons & the surgical team

✨ Advocating for your patient while they can’t advocate for themselves

If you’ve ever searched “How do I become an OR nurse?” or wondered whether surgical nursing might be right for you, start learning what actually happens behind those OR doors.

📌 Save this guide for later!

I’ll be sharing more OR nurse tips, surgical nursing education, and things I wish I knew before working in the operating room.

💬 Would you ever consider becoming a surgical nurse?

... Read moreWorking in the operating room as a surgical nurse offers a dynamic and critical role that goes far beyond assisting during surgery. From my personal experience and through conversations with colleagues, the most rewarding part of this specialty is the opportunity to be at the heart of patient care when it matters most. One vital aspect highlighted by experienced intraoperative nurses is the emphasis on teamwork and communication. Every member of the surgical team, including circulating nurses, scrub nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgeons, plays a crucial role in ensuring the procedure's success and patient safety. Clear communication during the surgical time-out, verification of patient identity and surgical site, and diligent monitoring of instruments and sponges ensure that safety protocols are strictly followed. Another key responsibility is the maintenance of sterility. Surgical nurses are entrusted with creating and preserving a sterile field, which is essential to minimizing infection risks. This includes performing surgical hand scrubs, carefully managing supplies, and anticipating the surgeon’s needs during the procedure. I also learned that intraoperative nursing requires vigilance in documentation and advocating for patients who are unconscious or unable to voice concerns. This advocacy role is a powerful reminder of the trust patients place in the surgical team. For those interested in becoming an OR nurse, gaining hands-on experience through perioperative nursing rotations or internships can provide invaluable insights. It’s also beneficial to connect with surgical nurses through forums and professional groups to hear firsthand advice about the challenges and rewards of this specialization. Most importantly, surgical nursing demands confidence, compassion, and a commitment to continuous learning. The ability to remain calm under pressure and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team is essential for success in the operating room. If you’re contemplating this path, remember that the role of an OR nurse is not just about technical skills but also about being a compassionate advocate and integral team player. Every surgery tells a story of hope and healing, and as a surgical nurse, you truly become part of that narrative.
