❓What causes it? Anything that causes…
☞ Increased acid production (Ex. Sepsis and DKA)
☞ Decreased acid excretion (Ex.renal failure)
☞ Increased bicarb loss (remember bicarb comes out of your BASE!)
❓What are the symptoms?
☞ Kussmaul’s respirations (deep rapid breathing to blow off CO2)
☞ Hypotension
☞ AMS
☞ Hypoxia (not a direct symptom but often associated with disorders that causes met. acidosis!)
☞ Hyperkalemia
