Why do I dread thunderstorms? 


It’s funny, isn't it? One moment you’re jumping at every boom, and the next you’re mesmerized by the same storm. I used to be absolutely terrified of thunderstorms – the classic thunderstorm anxiety. Every flash of lightning and rumble of thunder would send my heart racing. I'd close curtains, turn on all the lights, and try to distract myself from the sheer force of nature unfolding outside. That feeling of dread, of being scared of thunderstorms, was so intense. I remember once, a particularly strong wind during a summer thunderstorm made my whole house shake, and that really amplified my weather anxiety. It felt like the world was ending, and the fear of thunder was almost paralyzing. But over time, I started to notice something else. After the initial fright, there was often an incredible sense of calm. I began to wonder, why do thunderstorms calm me, even when they start by scaring me? I realized that part of overcoming my fear was simply understanding it. The loud crashes, the sudden darkness – these are primal triggers. Instead of bracing for the next loud noise, I started listening to the rhythm of the rain, watching the distant flashes through a window (from a safe spot, of course!). I discovered why people like thunderstorms. It's the unique smell of ozone in the air, the way the world feels cleansed and refreshed afterwards. There’s a certain beauty in nature's raw power. I started to appreciate the characteristics of a thunderstorm – the way it builds up, releases its energy, and then leaves behind a fresh, vibrant landscape. It's a powerful reminder of resilience, isn't it? Just like we weather our own personal storms, the earth endures and renews itself after a major downpour. Now, when the sky darkens and the thunder roars, I try to embrace it. I’ve found that creating a cozy, safe space indoors, perhaps with a warm drink and a good book, can turn a scary experience into something almost meditative. Sometimes, lying in bed, listening to the rain, I actually find myself thinking, 'why do I love thunderstorms so much now?' It’s a complete shift from my old reaction. It's about finding that balance between acknowledging the power and finding the beauty.
