The reality of self publishing…

I log in, glance at the dashboard, and see I’ve sold 12 books in the past 30 days. Twelve people took a chance on my book I was brave enough to put into the world on my own. I hope it serves them. I hope it means something.

When I held my first copies in my hands, I felt invincible, hopeful, proud, like I had carved a piece of myself into something tangible. But the reality of self-publishing hit fast and hard. The grind of promotion, the endless push to be seen, the sheer exhaustion of trying to make my voice heard, it wore me down.

I stopped checking my dashboard so often. Stopped obsessing over numbers. Chronic illness forced me to slow down, whether I wanted to or not. My foot slipped off the gas, and for a while, I let it.

It was my first published cookbook maybe my last. I feel myself being pulled in a different direction, but then again, maybe not. My love for food runs deep. Life is funny like that. One moment, you think you know exactly where you’re headed. The next, you’re standing at a crossroads, wondering if the path you took was just a chapter or the whole damn book.

... Read moreSelf-publishing offers a unique opportunity to share personal stories, but it comes with its own set of challenges. As the landscape continues to evolve, authors must be ready to adapt their marketing strategies. It's crucial to engage with readers on social media and leverage online platforms to reach wider audiences. Building a community around your work can lead to organic growth and sustained interest. Moreover, keeping up with trends in digital marketing, from email campaigns to leveraging influencer collaborations, can significantly impact visibility. The importance of analytics cannot be overstated; understanding reader engagement will guide future projects. Authors should also consider the role of networking with other self-published writers, joining forums, and participating in discussions about best practices. Engaging with fellow authors can provide vital support and new ideas for tackling the tough aspects of self-publishing, including dealing with chronic illness that may interrupt the creative flow. Whether the journey leads you to create multiple works or a singular piece, every self-published author has a story worth sharing and lessons learned to offer others traversing the same path.
