A reclining couch is not for you if…
Between three dogs and three kids… there was enough fur to make a whole other dog and snack trash to last us a week. Also the silverware? I found 14 spoons and 5 forks 🤣
Edit to add: this is not 2 years of not cleaning underneath the couch at all, trust that we did. BUT the reclining sectionals are massive and HEAVY and it wasn’t possible to get to every single area under the couch. We did our best, but when we finally took it apart to get rid of it, this was the aftermath.

Having three dogs and three kids myself, I completely understand the struggle described here. Reclining couches might look luxurious and comfortable, but they often come with hidden pitfalls in families like ours. From my experience, the bulky design and heavy reclining mechanisms create unreachable spaces beneath and inside the couch that quickly turn into dust, pet fur, crumbs, and even lost items like spoons or toys. Cleaning these couches requires more effort and time than standard sofas because it's nearly impossible to move them easily. As a result, messes accumulate over weeks or months, even if you regularly vacuum around the furniture. I once found a whole collection of random utensils and crumbs when I finally disassembled the sectional to deep clean it—very similar to what this post describes. If you have kids who snack on the couch and pets shedding fur, consider opting for simpler couch designs without reclining features or at least ensure you can move the couch freely for thorough cleaning. Another tip is to use washable slipcovers and invest in a handheld vacuum to tackle fur and debris daily before they build up. While reclining couches offer great comfort, for families with active children and pets, the maintenance can outweigh the benefits. Instead, look for furniture designed for easy cleaning, durable fabrics, and minimal gaps where dirt can hide. This decision can save you time, effort, and frustration while keeping your living space more hygienic and pleasant.
