จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวที่เคยเข้าร่วมฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์ ผมพบว่าหลายคนมักเข้าใจผิดโดยคิดว่าเป็นการออมเงินหรือประกันชีวิตเหมือนบริษัทเอกชน แต่ความจริงแล้วเป็นระบบช่วยเหลือกันเมื่อมีสมาชิกเสียชีวิตเท่านั้น ผมเคยประสบกับช่วงที่สมาชิกกลุ่มฌาปนกิจมีคนเสียชีวิตจำนวนมาก ทำให้สมาชิกที่เหลือถูกเรียกเก็บเงินเพิ่ม ซึ่งในบางเดือนผมต้องจ่ายเงินมากกว่าปกติ นี่เป็นจุดที่หลายคนประหลาดใจเพราะไม่ใช่เบี้ยคงที่เหมือนประกันชีวิตอย่างที่คิด นอกจากนี้ หากใครตัดสินใจลาออกก็จะไม่ได้รับเงินคืนจากที่เคยจ่ายไป เพราะเงินนั้นถูกนำไปช่วยเหลือสมาชิกท่านอื่นก่อนหน้าแล้ว ซึ่งถือเป็นความเสี่ยงของระบบนี้ อีกเรื่องที่ควรคำนึงคือเมื่อสมาชิกอายุมากขึ้น ความเสี่ยงการเสียชีวิตก็เพิ่มตาม ทำให้ยอดเรียกเก็บเงินรายเดือนไม่แน่นอนและอาจสูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ถ้ากลุ่มไม่มีสมาชิกใหม่เข้ามาตลอด กองทุนก็จะเสียสมดุลและอาจนำไปสู่การยกเลิกกิจการอย่างที่เคยเป็นข่าว ก่อนตัดสินใจเข้าร่วมฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์ ควรตรวจสอบว่าเป็นกองทุนที่จดทะเบียนถูกต้องตามพระราชบัญญัติการฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์ พ.ศ. 2545 และอยู่ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง เช่น กรมส่งเสริมการปกครองท้องถิ่น หรือกระทรวงการพัฒนาสังคมฯ เพื่อป้องกันการถูกหลอกลวงหรือแชร์ลูกโซ่ สุดท้าย การเลือกใช้บริการประกันชีวิตที่อยู่ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของ คปภ. นั้น ถือเป็นทางเลือกที่ปลอดภัยหากต้องการความมั่นคงในระยะยาว เพราะมีเงินสำรองตามกฎหมายและเบี้ยประกันคงที่ ซึ่งแตกต่างจากระบบฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์ที่ต้องพึ่งพาการถัวเฉลี่ยจ่ายจากสมาชิกในกลุ่ม การเข้าใจความแตกต่างและความเสี่ยงของฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์จะช่วยให้เราเลือกใช้บริการได้เหมาะสมและไม่ตื่นตระหนกจากข่าวที่เกิดขึ้นในช่วงนี้
