Why Dental Health Matters During Pregnancy🫶
A few months before I got pregnant, I had $1000s worth of dentist work done. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the BEST decision! I ended up getting pregnant with twins one month after my appointments were finished.
Later, I found out that I could have seriously affected myself and my babies if I had not gotten that work done, not just temporarily but for years!!
Poor oral health is linked to various risks including: preterm low birth rate, early pregnancy complications, and even early childhood cavities.
You can also be at an increased risk of tooth decay due to simply eating more food while being pregnant.
Here’s some negative effects of bad oral health before or during pregnancy:
☑ pregnancy can make women more likely to develop gum disease and cavities
☑ cavities & gum disease in pregnant women can increase the risk of premature birth and low birth weight babies
☑ pregnant women can also pass bacteria that causes cavities to their babies, which can lead to problems with their baby later in life 😯
☑ if a pregnant woman gets a mouth infection during pregnancy, it's possible for it to move to the rest of her body, as well as her baby
☑ in very rare and worst case scenarios, poor dental hygiene can lead to miscarriages
*There is a debate on whether or not the first trimester is safe for dental work, so always consult your dentist!*
The best time to take care of any issues is BEFORE you become pregnant. Talk to your dentist about a plan for your dental checkups during pregnancy. And remember to brush and floss (extra) on a daily basis during your pregnancy.

I am a hygienist and yes this is so important! However it’s a misconception that babies steal calcium from your teeth. If mom doesn’t have significant calcium in her diet, baby will leech calcium from bones. But, enamel of the teeth is extremely hard and calcium does not easily leech from teeth. Focus on impeccable home care (gum disease is extremely common and sometimes inevitable) and you should be ok!
