Avoiding getting blisters wearing heels?

Or any normal harder sided shoe that's typically worn without socks?

I've tried bandaids, mole skin, shoe stretches, waiting until the shoe stretched from regular wear, and higher quality shoes, half a shoe size larger (hard to walk), half a shoe size smaller (thinking that it would reduce slippage). Everything I've tried so far causes blisters if I wear them for more than 30-45 minutes.

... Read moreOh, I totally get the frustration! Those painful blisters from heels can absolutely ruin your day (and your feet!). I used to be in the same boat, wondering if I'd ever find a way to enjoy my favorite shoes without ending up with angry red spots, especially those annoying ones on my toes from new shoes. After countless attempts with bandaids, moleskin, and hoping my shoes would somehow magically stretch, I realized I needed a different approach. Here are the prevention strategies that finally worked for me to stop those painful blisters from forming: Anti-Blister Balms & Sticks: This was a total game-changer! Before putting on any heels, especially new ones, I now swipe an anti-blister balm (you can find brands like Body Glide or pharmacy-own versions) over all potential friction points. I focus on the back of my heel, the sides of my foot, and even between my toes if I'm wearing strappy sandals. It creates an invisible, slippery barrier that drastically reduces friction, which is the main culprit for blisters. Strategic Taping (Beyond Basic Bandaids): Forget just sticking a flimsy band-aid after the pain starts. I learned to proactively tape. For areas prone to blisters, like the back of the heel or those sensitive spots on your toes, professional athletic tape or even good quality medical paper tape can work wonders. Make sure your skin is clean and dry, apply the tape smoothly without wrinkles, and trim any excess. Some people even swear by specialty blister prevention tape designed for feet. Moisture-Wicking Liners/Socks (Even Thin Ones): Okay, I know many heels are worn without socks. But hear me out! There are super thin, almost invisible foot liners or 'no-show' socks made from moisture-wicking materials. Even a sheer nylon sock can add a crucial layer of protection, reduce sweat (a big contributor to friction and blisters), and provide a barrier. For closed-toe heels, these are an absolute lifesaver, helping to prevent a blister on a toe and general discomfort. Silicone Gel Inserts & Heel Grips: These have become a must-have for my shoe collection! If a shoe feels slightly too big, or if I find my heel slipping and rubbing, a silicone heel grip adhered to the inside back of the shoe can keep my foot secure and prevent that irritating friction. For the balls of my feet or under my toes, gel cushions can absorb impact and reduce pressure, making those long walks or standing periods in heels actually bearable, without developing a painful blister on a toe. Breaking in New Shoes PROPERLY: This might sound obvious, but it's astonishing how many of us skip this step. Don't save new heels for a big event! Wear them around the house for short periods, gradually increasing the time. Use shoe stretchers overnight, or even wear thick socks with your shoes and gently warm them with a hairdryer (while wearing them!) to help mold them to your feet. This helps soften stiff areas that cause those painful blisters from shoes. Foot Prep is Key: It's not just about the shoes; it's about your feet too! Keep your feet well-moisturized (but avoid applying lotion right before putting on shoes) and address any calluses. Smooth skin is less prone to friction than rough, dry skin. A little foot powder can also help keep things dry and minimize rubbing. By combining these strategies, I've finally said goodbye to the constant worry of painful blisters from heels. It takes a little extra effort, but trust me, happy feet mean a much happier you!
