Congratulations for making it this far yall! We’re all studying and spending hours sitting at the computer. But…
What’s the deal with nursing school resources?
First things first… if you can help it, don’t spend a DIME!
There are so many free online resources provided either by the school or on the internet that will help supplement your class lectures!
YouTube is a great resource but be discerning about your watch time and how much you actually need to know. Sometimes there aren’t helpful videos for nurses but there may be for medical students. Take what you need and move on. Complicating the information will never help you and can cause you to overthink.
Online resources that provide practice quizzes and NCLEX prep for free are really great, but make sure it is relevant to your textbook.
Speaking of…
ALWAYS REFER BACK FO THE TEXTBOOK!!! If your teachers say the exam is based on the textbook, there is a pretty good chance that it is true. Some programs may not actually do so, but that’s why it is important to review the objectives listed on your class manuals and syllabi.
If I have anymore that I think of, I’ll make an updated post 🤓
... Read moreFinals season in nursing school can truly feel like navigating a storm, right? I remember those intense weeks, fueled by coffee and a burning desire to understand every concept. One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was that you don't need to break the bank to find excellent study materials. My journey helped me discover some incredible free online resources that became my secret weapons, especially for those challenging cumulative exams.
First up, let's talk about Nurseslabs.com. This website was a game-changer for me. When I was prepping for any nursing school exam, especially those covering broad topics, I'd head straight to their quizzes section. They offer a vast library of NCLEX-style practice questions across almost every nursing specialty you can imagine. What made it invaluable was not just getting the answers right, but understanding the rationales behind each choice. This truly helped me practice critical thinking, which is essential for 'careful nursing' and not just rote memorization. I found their comprehensive study guides incredibly useful too, often using them as a checklist to ensure I covered all the high-yield topics.
Another absolute lifesaver, especially for visual and auditory learners, was the RegisteredNurseRN YouTube channel. Sarah, the creator, has a knack for explaining complex nursing concepts in such a clear, engaging way. Whether I was struggling with cardiac rhythms, acid-base imbalances, or specific medication classifications, her videos were my first stop. I’d often put them on while I was doing chores or drawing out my own handwritten nursing notes, as seen on my whiteboard. But don't stop at the videos! The RegisteredNurseRN.com website is equally fantastic. It complements her YouTube content with detailed study guides, printable resources, and even more practice quizzes. I'd typically watch a video on a topic, then immediately go to her website to test my knowledge with a quiz, reinforcing what I'd just learned. I also found Nexus Nursing to be a great supplementary channel for different perspectives.
Beyond these specific platforms, how you approach studying for nursing finals really matters. I quickly learned that passive studying, like simply re-reading my notes, wasn't effective for those extensive cumulative exams. Instead, I focused on active recall. This meant making my own flashcards (digital ones on my Samsung laptop, or physical ones for quick review), quizzing myself constantly, and trying to explain concepts out loud as if I were teaching a classmate. I also found it crucial to refer back to my textbook and the learning objectives listed in my syllabus. My professors always emphasized that the exam would pull from those, and they were always right! Using the syllabus as a checklist, I'd ensure I could truly articulate each objective in my own words, connecting it to a nursing school question or scenario. This multi-faceted approach, leveraging both specialized online resources and tried-and-true study techniques, is what truly helped me thrive during finals season. You've got this, future nurses!
