You may make the plans, but God directs the path
Life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned.
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that God still directs every step, even the unexpected ones.
Many of us experience the heartache of watching our carefully crafted life plans unravel, whether through career setbacks, personal disappointments, or unexpected challenges. The grief that follows isn’t just about the lost opportunity—it touches on our identity, shaking the foundation of who we believe we are or should be. The verses from Proverbs 16:9 remind us powerfully that while we may strategize and plan our paths, ultimately God directs our steps in ways that we often cannot foresee. From my own experience, I’ve found that the hardest moments are when we feel uprooted and uncertain about our future—be it a job rejection after years of hard work or a project that fails despite passion and investment. These moments bring questions like “Who am I now?” and “What is my purpose if this plan no longer works?” The negative thoughts that arise can be overwhelming, but turning towards God in prayer and seeking His guidance has always been my anchor. What’s beautiful in this journey is that God doesn’t abandon us when things fall apart. Instead, He offers a new foundation—a “new rug” to stand on—that aligns with His greater purpose for us, not simply our own ambitions. This doesn’t mean the pain or uncertainty immediately disappear, but it does mean we can move forward with hope, knowing each step is established by the One who sees the bigger picture. I encourage anyone struggling with lost plans or unforeseen grief to reach out in faith and lean into God’s wisdom. Embracing vulnerability in prayer and community can bring clarity and peace during those dark moments. Remember, life’s detours often lead to unexpected blessings and growth, revealing versions of ourselves we might never have discovered otherwise. Above all, be gentle with yourself and others who are navigating their own grief and disappointments. Each day is a precious gift—hold on to that truth and know that you are never alone on the path. Trust that even when the road is unclear, God’s hand is steadily directing your steps toward a meaningful and hopeful future.
