I grieve the friendship but I don’t regret the decision.

“Two people who once mattered greatly to each other who gradually stopped being able to meet each other’s emotional needs and then finally broke under the accumulated weight of it.”

The older I get, the more I realise that not every heartbreak comes from a romantic relationship. Sometimes it’s a friendship.

I wasn’t upset that my friend found new people or built new connections. What hurt was slowly realising that I was no longer being chosen the way I once was.

I watched someone I cared deeply about grow into a more confident version of herself.

I was there through her ups and downs in her life

I celebrated her wins.

I supported her when she doubted herself.

And somewhere along the way, I became less important in her life. I asked myself tons of questions while reflecting on our friendship. Sometimes I even asked if I was her counsellor or maybe a therapy Center for her.

Maybe that’s part of life.

Maybe people change.

Maybe priorities change.

Maybe friendships evolve.

I realised our friendship goals don’t align anymore but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.

I don’t hate her or her new friend either. In fact, I genuinely wish them well.

I don’t regret the friendship we had. I felt that the friendship between us was real, genuine and sincere.

What I am grieving is not the person but the friendship we used to have.

The conversations, familiarity and feeling of being chosen without having to ask for it.

For a long time, I held on because I remembered who we were. Eventually, I had to accept who we had become and sometimes loving someone means accepting that they no longer have the same place for you in their life that they once did.

That lesson hurt but it also taught me that I deserve friendships where I don’t have to wonder whether I still matter.

I grieve the friendship but I do not regret walking away.

I used to think that some doors are slammed upon ending a friendship but I also learnt that not all doors are closed out of hatred.

The truth is some doors are closed because staying hurts more than leaving.

Losing a friend honestly? Hurts pretty damn much but it’s been 2 months or so. Don’t really remember it anymore but after all of it above, I never once looked back with the intention of returning or to open my doors to her again.

Right now, I am still hesitating about opening up to people really but I’m still trying to be approachable and open to making new friends though it is really tough. I don’t know maybe PTSD yikes but it did show me how or what I should be expecting in a friendship.

... Read moreNavigating the end of a friendship can be as emotionally challenging as the breakdown of a romantic relationship. From personal experience, I've found that grief in friendships often stems from a shift in emotional connection rather than any specific event. It’s the gradual realization that once-shared priorities and closeness have diverged, leaving both parties feeling less chosen and valued. This process reminded me deeply of the delicate balance between giving support and maintaining boundaries. When you find yourself acting as an emotional anchor or counsellor in a one-sided manner, it’s crucial to reflect on whether the friendship is balanced or draining. Accepting that people grow and change at different paces can help alleviate some of the pain, even though it doesn't immediately lessen the heartache. One thing I’ve learned is the importance of self-worth in friendships. We deserve connections where we no longer have to wonder if we matter. This shift in understanding helped me embrace the truth that walking away sometimes preserves our emotional health better than clinging on. Interestingly, the pain of loss brings a paradoxical clarity: not every closed door is slammed out of anger or rejection. Some doors close simply because remaining causes more hurt. This mindset eased my grieving process and prevented bitterness toward the friend who grew apart. Since then, hesitations about opening up to new people are natural but remain a part of healing. Being open and approachable, despite fear or emotional scars (even resembling PTSD), is a courageous step toward new friendships that align better with one’s evolving values. Ultimately, grieving a past friendship without regret helps transform loss into wisdom—reminding us that genuine connections are about mutual care, shared emotional nourishment, and the freedom to evolve without holding grudges. Embracing this has profoundly reshaped how I view friendships and personal growth.
