Kitchen & Service Yard updates & regret? - 6 months in
Honestly, this space has evolved a lot since move-in day. What started as a very basic, practical setup slowly became something that feels more “us” — functional, a lil more cluttered 😂 but still cozy and aesthetic 🤍
🍳 Kitchen regret
– not adding more sockets / electrical points, we realised we have more appliances than expected!
🧺 Service yard mini glow-up
– changed to a multi tier laundry basket!
– installed window mesh from Clario, keep insect out really well!
Gas Heater is still by far the best water heater decision for us~~
Living in the space for a few months really taught me what I actually need vs what I thought I needed. It’s still not “perfect,” but it’s comfortable, practical, and feels like home — and I think that matters more 🫶
If you’re moving in soon: don’t rush to buy everything at once. Live in your space first, then slowly adjust 💭
... Read moreLiving in a new home truly transforms your perspective on what is essential versus what initially seems necessary. After six months in, I've developed a greater appreciation for how simple updates can add both comfort and efficiency to daily routines, particularly in smaller spaces like my 4-room HDB.
One realization was about electrical points in the kitchen. Many new homeowners underestimate the number of appliances they end up using consistently. From coffee machines to rice cookers, blenders, and air fryers, the demand quickly exceeds initial expectations. If I could advise anyone moving into a new home, it would be to install extra sockets during renovation or fitting stages. This flexibility prevents inconvenient extensions or cluttered power strips later.
The service yard, often overlooked, became a personal favorite spot after minor enhancements. Switching to a multi-tier laundry basket revolutionized how I organized washing essentials, saving space and making laundry tasks more manageable. Moreover, installing a window mesh from a brand like Clario proved invaluable in keeping insects out without compromising ventilation. This small tweak greatly improved the quality of the space.
In terms of appliances, the decision to install a gas heater for hot water was by far the best choice. It offered consistent heating performance ideal for our household needs, proving more reliable than some electric alternatives. This choice reinforces how decisions based on the specific demands of one’s lifestyle and home infrastructure matter most.
From a broader view, my experience showed that living in your space first, rather than rushing to buy and install everything, allowed me to identify true needs and preferences. This approach not only avoided unnecessary purchases but also layered personal touches that made the space genuinely ours—comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.
For anyone embarking on a similar home journey, I recommend embracing imperfection and prioritizing adaptability. Your home will evolve with you, and small, well-thought-out updates can significantly enhance everyday living. Each scratch on the stainless steel countertop, for instance, tells a story of life unfolding—something that eventually grows on you and adds character to your kitchen.
