After a lot of research and careful experimentation, I finally figured out how to incorporate it safely into my routine, and honestly, my Scalp Health has never been better! So, what exactly does glycolic acid do for your hair and scalp? Think of it as a gentle exfoliator for your scalp. Just like it helps shed dead skin cells on your face, it does the same for your scalp, clearing away buildup from styling products, excess oil, and dead skin. This can really make a difference for issues like mild dandruff or just general dullness at the roots. It creates a cleaner environment for your hair follicles, which, in turn, can support healthier hair growth. Many people wonder, 'Is glycolic acid good for hair?' The answer is a resounding yes, indirectly! By creating a healthier scalp environment, you're setting the stage for your hair to thrive from the roots up. My go-to product has often been The Ordinary's 7% Glycolic Acid Toning Solution because it's affordable and effective. Here's exactly how I apply it for my scalp: I section my hair before shampooing, when my hair is dry. I use a small applicator bottle or even a cotton pad to carefully dab the solution directly onto my scalp, focusing on areas where I experience the most buildup, oiliness, or itchiness. I don't drench my hair, just target the scalp directly. Then, I gently massage it in. The big question always is, 'How long to leave glycolic acid on the scalp?' For me, starting with 10-15 minutes once a week was key. Now, I sometimes leave it on for up to 20-30 minutes, but always listen to your scalp!
