Do You Always Put Your Family First?

Hay Head of the HOUSE 👋🏽 Do you ever catch yourself giving more or going without something, just so your kids or partner doesn’t go without anything?

I’ve been noticing lately how much I give and never take. Say for instance, I order a pizza but my kid wants a stuff crust with only cheese and my husband wants a thin crust loaded with meat. I on the other hand want mushrooms and olives. My husband and my kid don’t like mushrooms in olives. So, I will order 2 separate pizzas to their likings and I will eat from their order.

I don’t order me a pizza because I’m probably only going to eat one or two slices, so why waste the money? They’re not going to eat their entire pizza either.

I’ve come to realize, I’m doing the ordering, I’m the one that most likely will pick it up too. I will serve it and I’m the one that will clean up. I’m doing all of this to make them happy, but what about me and my wants?

It’s been this way for so long that it has become the normal. It’s more than pizza, it’s a million and 1 other things.

I’m done leaving myself out. I’m done thinking of others first. I’m going to do things my way and if they don’t like it, then they can do what they like on their own.

No more stress or worrying about other grown folks wants. It’s me time!!!

Do you leave yourself out to please your people and family? Are you willing to put yourself first?

Let me know in the comments below!

... Read moreIt's so easy to fall into the trap of believing that family always has to come first, isn't it? I know I did. For years, I genuinely thought that being 'family-oriented' meant constantly putting everyone else's needs above my own. Whether it was choosing pizza toppings I didn't want or sacrificing my own plans, I felt like it was my duty. But what I've learned, often the hard way, is that this mindset can actually be detrimental to everyone in the long run. Think about it: if the person holding everything together is constantly depleted, how much good can they truly do? We're often taught from a young age that a good parent or partner makes endless sacrifices. But this isn't sustainable, and frankly, it's not a healthy interpretation of what it means to be 'family oriented'. True family orientation should involve creating a supportive environment where everyone's well-being is valued, including yours. It's about modeling self-respect and showing your children (and reminding your partner) that it's okay, even necessary, to have boundaries and personal needs. I used to worry that if I didn't put my family first in every single instance, I would be seen as selfish. But I've reframed 'selfish' as 'self-care' and 'self-preservation'. It’s not about neglecting your loved ones; it's about making sure your cup is full so you have more to pour. This realization was huge for me. It’s about Putting MySelf First not instead of my family, but alongside them, as an integral part of the family unit. This journey of re-evaluation can be particularly challenging as families move through different stages of the 'family life cycle'. When kids are young, the demands are intense, and it feels like every moment is dedicated to them. As they grow, new challenges arise, and it’s important to adapt your self-care strategies. It's a continuous process of adjusting and finding balance. Perhaps during the busiest years, 'me time' looks like 15 minutes of quiet reading, while later on, it might mean pursuing a hobby or taking a solo trip. The key is to be intentional about carving out that space for yourself, regardless of the stage of life you're in. So, how do we actually start Putting MySelf First without feeling guilty? Here are a few things that have helped me: Start Small: You don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Begin with small acts of self-prioritization. Order your own pizza topping, take an extra 10 minutes in the shower, or say 'no' to one extra request this week. Communicate Your Needs: Your family might be so used to you being the 'giver' that they don't even realize you have unmet needs. Gently explain that you're working on balancing your own well-being with family responsibilities. Schedule 'Me Time': Just like you schedule appointments for others, schedule time for yourself. Treat it as non-negotiable. Whether it's a walk, a hobby, or just quiet reflection, protect that time. Redefine 'Family First': Shift your perspective. A healthy family unit thrives when all members are healthy and happy. Your happiness contributes to the overall well-being of your family. It's not a zero-sum game. Delegate and Empower: You don't have to do it all. Can your partner take on more? Can your kids help with chores? Empowering them helps them grow and lightens your load. Remember, you deserve to be nourished and fulfilled too. It’s not selfish to care for yourself; it’s essential. By prioritizing your own needs, you're not just helping yourself, you're setting a powerful example and contributing to a healthier, happier family dynamic overall.
