We learned the hard way so you don’t have to!

Set up your systems early.

We didn’t assign SKUs when we started. It felt unnecessary at the time.

Then we grew… and suddenly it mattered—a lot.

Now we’re going back and fixing it, one product at a time.

Lesson after 15 years: Build the systems before you think you need them. Growth doesn’t wait.

What’s one lesson your business taught you?

... Read moreFrom my own journey running a small business, I can attest that setting up systems early is one of the smartest moves you can make. When I first started, I also thought organizing SKUs and workflows was unnecessary; the business was small, and the idea seemed tedious. However, as demand increased and inventory expanded, the lack of structured organization caused confusion, delayed order fulfillment, and sometimes even lost sales. Implementing SKU systems retrospectively was time-consuming and required sorting through old records, manually assigning codes, and training staff on the new process. This experience taught me that small initial investments in systematization can prevent exponential headaches down the line. For example, having unique SKU numbers ensures precise inventory tracking, streamlines communication with suppliers, and enables accurate sales analysis. Additionally, setting up operational systems early lays the groundwork for scaling your business smoothly. Whether it’s inventory management, customer databases, or accounting workflows, these foundations support efficiency and consistency. Don’t wait until growth forces your hand — take proactive steps to design systems that serve your current scale but also accommodate future expansion. It’s also important to regularly review and update your systems as your business evolves. What works initially might need adaptation as you add new products or services. Integrating technology tools like inventory management software or CRM platforms can also be a game-changer once your operations reach a certain complexity. Ultimately, the lesson I share with fellow entrepreneurs is this: Growth won’t wait for your organization to catch up, so build solid processes early. This proactive approach reduces stress, improves customer satisfaction, and positions your business for long-term success.
