Help! I think Iām a boring person
I think I might be a boring person. Actually, Iām pretty sure that I am. It seems like everyone I know has some sort of hobby, or something they enjoy doing in their free time. Iām not saying being a boring person is bad but it definitely has its challenges. I like being at home on my couch or in my bed. I donāt love reading or cooking or organizing. I workout a few days a week BUT not because I want to, I donāt typically enjoy it. Anything I enjoy doing usually involves eating or spending money and I canāt do that all of the time š
I need some ideas!
What are your hobbies?
What do you do when you arenāt working or attending to your family?
It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, 'I think I might be boring,' isn't it? I've been there countless times, scrolling through social media, seeing everyone else's vibrant lives, and wondering why my evenings often look like a repeat of couch + snack + TV. Itās a totally valid feeling, especially when our daily routines can feel a bit... monotonous. But what if being 'boring' is just a signal that it's time to explore, rather than a permanent state of being? After feeling stuck for a while, I decided to shift my perspective. Instead of waiting for a grand passion to strike, I started thinking about small, low-pressure activities I could try, even if just for 15-30 minutes. The key for me was to remove the pressure of 'liking' it immediately or becoming an expert. It was more about curiosity. One thing I discovered is that hobbies don't have to be expensive or super elaborate. My initial thought was always, 'Anything I enjoy doing usually involves eating or spending money,' just like you mentioned! But I've found some amazing free or very low-cost ways to make my days feel more interesting. Here are a few things I've tried that might spark some ideas for you: Embrace Nature (Even a Little Bit!): I used to think hiking was the only 'nature' hobby. But what about simply taking a longer walk around your neighborhood? I started paying attention to the plants, the architecture, or even just the clouds. Or, if you have a local park, try a slow walk with a podcast. It's amazing how much a change of scenery, even a small one, can shift your mood. I even tried some beginner birdwatching using a free app ā no special gear needed! Creative Play (No Art Skills Required): I'm definitely not an artist, but I found that doodling in a cheap notebook or trying out a 'draw with me' YouTube tutorial was surprisingly fun and relaxing. You don't need to create a masterpiece; the act of creating something, anything, is incredibly satisfying. Digital art apps on your phone or tablet can be a great entry point too! Learn Something New (For Free!): There are so many free resources online! I started learning basic Spanish phrases using Duolingo, and even just ten minutes a day makes me feel like I'm expanding my world. YouTube is also a treasure trove for learning skills ā from basic coding to knitting, or how to make a simple delicious recipe (that doesn't break the bank!). I even found a channel that teaches you how to identify constellations! Community & Connection (Without the Pressure): This one can feel daunting, especially if you're an introvert. But I realized 'community' doesn't always mean big groups. I started volunteering once a month at a local animal shelter ā just for an hour! It felt good to contribute, and I met some lovely people without the pressure of a formal social event. Even joining an online book club or a forum about a niche interest can be a great way to connect. Reflective Journaling & Self-Discovery: Sometimes, the best way to make life more interesting is to understand ourselves better. I picked up a simple journal and started writing down three things I was grateful for each day, or just brain-dumping my thoughts. It's a surprisingly effective way to process things and even discover hidden interests or things you genuinely enjoy. Remember, it's not about instantly transforming your life, but about taking small, curious steps. If something doesn't click, that's okay! Just move on to the next idea. The goal is to find what makes you feel a little less 'boring' and a little more alive. Whatās one tiny new thing you could try this week? I'd love to hear your experiments!
