The pivot
This was the end result of a painting that hit mistake after mistake. But when I gave up and let the paint brush take over- I fell back in love. Pure dopamine hit and reset for the day.
As someone who has struggled with perfectionism in painting, I completely relate to the journey of working through mistakes and eventually finding joy in the process. It’s easy to get frustrated when a piece doesn’t go according to plan, but sometimes the breakthrough comes when you stop trying to control every stroke. Allowing the brush to move freely can unexpectedly create new forms and textures that you wouldn't have thought of intentionally. This approach not only relieves pressure but also taps into a deeper creative flow that feels almost meditative. In my experience, this moment of surrender often offers a burst of dopamine, a natural feel-good chemical that refreshes the mind and inspires continued work. It’s like a reset button for your creative energy. Instead of focusing on perceived failure, the attention shifts to exploration and play, which ultimately enhances the richness and uniqueness of the artwork. Over time, these ‘mistakes’ become distinctive features that tell a personal story within the piece. If you’re facing a frustrating stage in your painting, I encourage you to set aside expectations and simply enjoy the sensation of painting itself. Experiment with loose brushwork, blend unexpected colors, or even try painting blindfolded for a few strokes. This can open up new avenues of expression you might have never discovered otherwise. The pivot from control to freedom is something many artists experience, and it often leads to renewed passion and creativity that lasts far beyond a single project.
