POV: living in the Caribbean for 3 month recap

2024/9/18 Edited to

... Read moreOh, you're curious about what it's really like to live in Aruba for a few months? Let me tell you, it's an experience that goes way beyond a typical vacation. Having spent three incredible months living in the Caribbean, specifically Aruba, I gained such a deeper appreciation for the island's rhythm and culture. It wasn't just about the stunning beaches and clear waters – though those are definitely a highlight! My time here truly offered a POV rarely seen by short-term visitors. As a digital nomad, setting up shop in Aruba was an interesting journey. Finding reliable Wi-Fi, for instance, is crucial. Thankfully, most accommodations are well-equipped, but having a local SIM card from providers like Digicel or Setar for backup data is a lifesaver, especially if you plan to work from different spots. I found that living like a local meant exploring the less touristy spots for groceries and dining, which not only saved money but also led to some amazing culinary discoveries. The local markets, especially those outside Oranjestad, are fantastic for fresh produce and getting a taste of authentic Aruban life. This kind of practical insight is something you only pick up when you're truly living there. One of the biggest takeaways from my time living in Aruba was discovering the true warmth of the Aruban people. They are incredibly welcoming and always ready to share a smile. Learning a few Papiamento phrases, even simple greetings like 'Bon dia' (Good morning) or 'Danki' (Thank you), goes a long way. It really helps you immerse yourself and feel more at home and connect on a deeper level than just being a tourist. For anyone considering a longer stay, be prepared for the pace of island life. Things move a bit slower, which can be a charming adjustment, but also something to factor into your daily planning. Patience is definitely a virtue here! Transportation is another key aspect. While taxis are readily available, renting a car for at least part of your stay gives you the freedom to explore hidden gems like the stunningly rugged Arikok National Park or secluded beaches away from the main tourist strips. This is where you really get to live the Caribbean experience, venturing beyond the resorts. Don't be afraid to drive off the beaten path – that's where the real adventures lie. The cost of living can be comparable to some U.S. cities, especially if you stick to tourist areas or always eat out at high-end restaurants. However, with a bit of savvy, like cooking more often and seeking out local eateries (like those serving delicious pastechis or fresh seafood), it's manageable. I learned to love the supermarkets for their variety and found some great deals on local products. Budgeting carefully for accommodation and groceries can make a big difference over a three-month period. My three-month recap of living in the Caribbean wouldn't be complete without mentioning the activities. Beyond the obvious snorkeling and diving, try paddleboarding at dawn, explore the natural pools, or take a sunset boat trip. Even just a daily walk along the beach as the sun rises, watching the island wake up, is an experience I truly miss. This entire "living in the Caribbean" adventure taught me so much about adapting, enjoying the moment, and embracing a different way of life. If you're dreaming of a similar digital nomad stint, Aruba is definitely worth considering for its safety, beauty, and incredibly friendly atmosphere. It's a place that truly gets under your skin, making you want to stay much longer than three months!
