A Bad Day Turned Good

I pulled an overnighter yesterday, due to my horrendous sleep schedule but still needing to get things done- and the whole morning was awful to say the least.

•My rolltop desk pull-down portion snapped in half, so now I have to find a way to repair it.

•I needed to ship out a package, but the items wouldn't fit in any box I tried (took a while, but I eventually got it)

•Went to print out the label (cheaper to do at home) and the printer said it had a paper jam when it didn't. Either way, it refuses to work so I had to go somewhere to have it printed for me.

•Finally get to the post office to ship it out, and I also need to renew my subscription there for the New Year. So I go to, asked for my ID, open my wallet...ID is gone.

•Drive home to get my ID, and hit every red light on the way there and back.

So after all of this, added onto being extremely tired, I was about done with the day. But I knew if I I went home I'd just sit there upset, so I tried to turn it around. Too cold to go to the park, so I ended up settling on my favorite local coffee shop. I go in, try something I've never had (Cookie Butter Latte- delicious!), and the barista hands it to me with a beautiful latte art on top. I'd never had latte art before, so I stare at it and it makes all my anger fade away for just a moment. I thank her for it, we talk, and I find out they're having a music night later in the day.

I sat at a table and did some tarot readings for myself as I drank my coffee. I'm trying to not be as worried about what people think, so I make myself do the readings and not concern about if anyone is judging me for doing tarot. And, y'know what? Nobody did.

Later that night, I come in for the music night. I sit and chat with people I've never met, and felt so welcomed anyway. It didn't matter, I just listened to the lovely music everyone played and talked with everybody.

It was so nice to just go out, sit and chat, and have a calm human experience. I think I need to focus on those moments more than I do the hard ones.

So I may have had a bad morning, but I didn't let myself have a bad day.

... Read moreWe all have those mornings where nothing goes right, just like my disastrous day started. And honestly, nothing makes a bad day worse than a disappointing latte! You're craving that comforting, perfect cup, and instead, you get something... 'bad.' So, what exactly makes a latte less than lovely, and how can we avoid those coffee catastrophes? From my own experiences, a truly 'bad latte' usually comes down to a few things. First, the milk: if it's over-steamed, it tastes burnt or scalded. If it's under-steamed, it's watery and lacks that velvety texture crucial for good latte art. Then there's the espresso itself – if the shots are pulled incorrectly, it can be too bitter or sour, completely overwhelming the milk. And let's not forget temperature! A latte that's lukewarm or too hot to drink immediately just isn't right. It can really throw off your whole morning vibe when you're already trying to navigate a tough day. After my morning ordeal, I was so relieved my Cookie Butter Latte was absolutely delicious with its beautiful latte art. It made me think about how important it is to find a coffee shop that consistently delivers. My trick? I pay attention to the baristas. Do they seem passionate and skilled? Is the machine clean and well-maintained? Don't be afraid to ask for recommendations or even specifics – like if you prefer a slightly cooler temperature or a stronger espresso shot. Sometimes, just observing others' drinks, especially those with impressive latte art, can tell you a lot about the quality and care a cafe puts into its craft. Just like how I used my coffee shop visit to reset my day, a great latte isn't just about the drink; it's about the entire experience. It's that moment of calm, that little treat that reminds you to pause and breathe. If you accidentally get a 'bad latte,' don't let it ruin your whole vibe. Most reputable coffee shops will happily remake it for you if you politely explain the issue. Or, like me, use that moment to find something else that sparks joy – maybe observing the atmosphere, or even doing a little self-reflection, perhaps with a journal or even some tarot cards if you're feeling it, right there at your table. Another thing I've learned is to trust your gut when picking a new spot. Is the place busy but the baristas are still attentive? Are people lingering and enjoying their drinks? These are often good signs of a place that values its customers and their coffee experience. And if you're feeling adventurous, don't hesitate to try a new flavor, just like I did with the Cookie Butter Latte. You never know when you'll discover your next favorite drink that perfectly brightens even the most challenging mornings. Remember, the goal is to make those hard moments count less, and savor those calm, happy human experiences more.
