We have to build the dream team that will make our communities better
From my experience living in Queens, I’ve seen firsthand how critical it is to support candidates who truly represent community interests and progressive values. Electing leaders who focus on equity, justice, and public safety can transform neighborhoods for the better. Candidates like Jessica Ramos, Grace Meng, and Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas embody this commitment by advocating for thorough utility audits, halting ICE funding, and promoting fair justice for all. I remember the last primary election when the buzz around progressive candidates was palpable—people gathered, debates were lively, and social media was ablaze with discussions about who could best serve our diverse communities. The stakes felt high because we all know that policies on policing, housing, education, and immigrant rights directly impact our daily lives. One message that stuck with me was the emphasis on investing in our communities rather than defunding essential services. As Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez once said, "The strongest communities have the most programs." This means backing initiatives that address gun violence through community policing approaches and creating structured support systems. Additionally, seeing candidates endorsed by respected groups like the NYC Detectives Endowment Association provided a nuanced perspective—that public safety and progressive values are not mutually exclusive. It gave me confidence that electing the right officials could help strike a balance between law enforcement accountability and effective crime prevention. Voting for judicial candidates who uphold fairness and equality is just as important. Judges like Julie M. Miner, who advocate for equitable access to justice for all, remind us that the justice system should serve every community member without bias or barriers. Ultimately, building the dream team is about collective action. By educating ourselves on candidates’ platforms, attending forums, and voting in every election, we contribute to making Queens a safer, fairer, and more inclusive place. I encourage everyone in Queens and beyond to recognize the power of their vote and invest it in visionary leaders who prioritize community wellbeing and progressive progress.
