Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about my recent 'Daily Art: Witch' piece and dive deeper into the technique I used – ink cross-hatching. It's one of my absolute favorites for adding depth and texture to pen drawings, especially when I'm working on something as enchanting as a witch! For those curious about ink cross-hatching, it's essentially building up tone and shadow using intersecting lines. Instead of blending, you create layers of parallel lines, and then layer more lines going in different directions (like a criss-cross pattern) to make areas darker. The closer your lines are, and the more layers you add, the darker the value becomes. It's super effective for giving your artwork that classic, illustrative feel, perfect for adding a bit of old-world charm to mystical subjects. When I started this witch pen drawing, I knew I wanted to emphasize the mystery and form of her hat and upper body. Black ink cross-hatching was perfect for this. I began with lighter, more spaced-out lines in areas that would catch the light, then gradually increased the density and added more cross-directional lines for the deeper shadows, especially under the brim of her tall, pointed hat. This really made it pop and gave it a tangible, almost fabric-like texture, making the witch's hat feel substantial. One tip I've learned that really helps with pen drawing and cross-hatching is to work in layers. Don't try to make an area super dark in one go. Build it up slowly. This allows you to control the values much better and avoid overworking a spot. Also, pay attention to the direction of your lines. They can help define the form of your subject. For example, on the curved tip of the witch's hat, I tried to follow the curve with my cross-hatching lines, which enhanced its three-dimensionality. Another common challenge is making sure your lines don't look too stiff or mechanical; try to vary your pressure slightly for a more organic feel. And about those little details – the orange accents! I love adding a splash of unexpected color to my ink drawings. It wasn't much, just a few subtle touches on the witch's attire, but it instantly brought a bit of warmth and magic to the otherwise monochrome piece. It shows that even with a predominantly black ink drawing, a small hint of color can make a big difference and draw the eye to specific elements, adding a focal point without overpowering the intricate ink work.
