Shikoku Karst
Shikoku Karst is one of the three major karsts in Japan, which stretches from 1,000m to 1,500m above sea level on the border of Ehime and Kochi prefectures. It is called "Switzerland of Japan" because of the idyllic landscape of white limestone dotted on green meadows for about 25km from east to west.
Best season: The best time to hike and drive is in the early summer of June-July, when the Lilies and Campanillas bloom.
Superb view drive route: "Shikoku Karst Longitudinal Line (Prefectural Road No. 383)" which was also selected as one of the 100 best roads in Japan is the main. However, caution is required when driving because the road width is narrow.
Starry sky and sea of clouds: Because the altitude is high and light pollution is low, you can see a starry sky at night and a sea of clouds in the early morning depending on the conditions.
Main area / spot
・ Tengu Kogen (East side): Close to the highest point (1,485m above sea level), with a promenade. There are accommodation facilities.
・ Godan Kogen ・ Himezurudaira (central part): A typical landscape where cattle grazing can be seen spreads. Meals, accommodation, and camping are also available at Himezuruso.
・ Onogahara (west side): There are limestone caves and cafes, and it is known as a scenic spot.
Access: From Kochi Prefecture, it is about 2 hours by car from Matsuyama City.
Clothes and equipment: The temperature is often nearly 10 degrees lower than the lower world, so you need something to wear even in summer. Also, since there are almost no gas stations on the mountain, it is recommended to finish refueling before heading.
The starry sky is no joke
私は四国カルストを訪れた際、まさに「日本のスイス」と呼ばれる理由を実感しました。特に天狗高原の遊歩道は整備されていて、初心者でも安心してハイキングを楽しめます 。早朝には運が良ければ雲海が見られ、その神秘的な景色に心が洗われるようでした。 また、五段高原や姫鶴平ではのんびりと牛の放牧風景を見ながら過ごせます。牧草の香りと清々しい空気が心地よく、日常の忙しさを忘れさせてくれました。姫鶴荘での食事も地元の食材を生かしたメニューが充実していて、キャンプ利用者にも親切な施設です。 大野ヶ原は穴場と聞いていましたが、実際に訪れてみると鍾乳洞探検やカフェでのひと息が楽しめ、旅の良いアクセントになりました。特に日没後の星空観察は格別で、光害の少ない高地だからこそ見られる星の輝きは感動的です。 ドライブでは県道383号線の四国カルスト縦断線がおすすめですが、道幅の狭い場所もあるため安全運転が必要。夏でも標高が高いため気温が低く、薄手の上着は必須です。給油スポットが少ないので、出発前に燃料を満タンにしておくことも大事なポイントです。 四国カルストは自然や絶景、星空を満喫できるだけでなく、ちょっとした注意点を守れば安心して楽しめる場所です。ぜひ驚くほど美しい大自然を体験してみてください。
