Little Kyoto "Out of Stone"
Izushi, located in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a castle town known as the Little Kyoto of Tajima. Even in 2026, it is a popular tourist destination for its historical cityscape and unique food culture.
1. Izushi Sara Soba
Speaking of Izushi, "Sara soba" is the most famous.
Characteristics: Soba divided into small plates is served with condiments such as eggs, tororo, and grated daikon radish.
Proof of soba connoisseur: There are shops where you can get a proof of "soba connoisseur" by stacking plates after eating and exceeding your height (or 20 or more).

2. Drum Tower
It is a clock tower of the early Meiji era which is a symbol of Izushi.
Known as the oldest clock tower in Japan, the sound of drums echoes every hour, conveying the atmosphere of the castle town.
3. Historical spot
Izushi Castle Ruins: The ruins of a castle built in 1604. The gate to the castle and the corner turret have been restored, making it a scenic spot overlooking the town.
Izushi Karo Yashiki: It is a valuable building that conveys the construction of the samurai residence in the Edo period to the present.
Izushi Eirakukan: The oldest existing theater in the Kinki region. Even now, kabuki and vaudeville performances are held.
4. Access
Train / Bus: Approximately 30 minutes by Zentan Bus from Toyooka Station or Gobaru Station on the JR Sanin Main Line.
By car: About 20 minutes from Tajima Airport IC on the Kitakinki Toyooka Expressway.
Because it is about 30 to 40 minutes by car from Kinosaki Onsen, it is a standard route to visit with a hot spring trip.

出石は歴史的な城下町の風情を今も色濃く残しており、小京都として訪れる価値が高い場所です。私自身も何度か訪れましたが、特に印象的だったのは「皿そば」の食文化です。小皿に少量ずつ盛られたそばを、卵やとろろ、大根おろしなどの薬味と一緒に味わうスタイルは、食べるほどに飽きない工夫がされています。私はいつも、食べ終わった小皿を積み上げて自分の背丈を超えられるか挑戦するのも楽しみの一つになっています。 また、歴史的なスポットも充実しており、明治時代初期に建てられた辰鼓楼は出石のシンボルとして町の雰囲気を引き立てています。1時間ごとに響く太鼓の音を聞くと、時間を超えた歴史の息吹を感じられました。さらに出石城跡からの街並みの眺望は絶景で、散策すると江戸時代の武家屋敷の造りや伝統的な建築を間近に感じることができます。近畿地方最古の芝居小屋・出石永楽館では、歌舞伎や寄席などの公演が今も行われており、文化体験の場としてもおすすめです。 アクセスについてはJR豊岡駅や江原駅から全但バスを利用して約30分ほど。車なら北近畿豊岡自動車道の但馬空港ICから約20分と便利です。また、隣接する城崎温泉から車で30〜40分のため、温泉旅行とあわせて訪れる人も多いです。私も出石で皿そばの食べ歩きを楽しんだ後、城崎温泉でゆったりと過ごすプランがお気に入りです。 最後に、出石は小京都らしい落ち着いた町並みが美しく、写真撮影にもぴったりなスポットが多いので、カメラを持って散策するのも楽しみの一つです。旅の記録としてSNSにアップする際は、ぜひ皿そばや辰鼓楼の写真を忘れずに撮影してください。私もDJI Pocket 2を使って動画撮影しましたが、写真のほうが静止画ならではの味わいがあっておすすめです。旅の思い出作りにぜひ一度訪れてみてください。
