Highlights of 📍Kyoto, Japan
I recently returned from Japan and there were so many things I loved from each city. Kyoto’s culture is more traditional compared to other major cities and here were my highlights from the day trip:
🍵 MATCHA: Kyoto is known for their matcha and integrating the flavor into everything! Here you can taste matcha ice cream, parfaits, lattes, beer, ramen, wafers, cookies and sooo many other foods.
🙏🏾 TEMPLES: There are both Buddhist temples (Black colored temples) and Shinto temples (Orange colored temples) all over. As you walk through the area, you can also see people practicing Shinto religion and participating in the prayer ceremonies.
👗GEISHA SHOWS: I didn’t get a chance to go to a Geisha show myself, but there are available in the evenings starting at 5PM. You can buy your ticket at the door and see the geisha women perform either before or after dinner at a local restaurant nearby. The restaurants are typically fine-dining establishments so be sure to dress appropriately.
Overall, Kyoto is a great place to visit to get a feel for a more traditional Japanese culture.

After experiencing the vibrant culture of Kyoto firsthand, I wanted to share some extra tips and insights to help you plan your perfect trip! While my initial visit focused on the core highlights, there's so much more to discover, especially if you're looking to build out a more detailed itinerary or just curious about what else Kyoto offers. Navigating Kyoto Like a Local: One of the first things to consider when planning your Kyoto itinerary is transportation. While exploring on foot is wonderful for soaking in the atmosphere, Kyoto's main attractions are spread out. I found that a combination of local buses and the subway was incredibly efficient. Consider getting a day pass if you plan on visiting multiple sites. Taxis are also readily available but can add up quickly. For a truly unique experience, renting a bicycle is popular, especially for exploring areas like Arashiyama or along the Kamo River. Deep Dive into Temples and Shrines: My trip included visits to both Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines, and I can't recommend them enough. For a breathtaking Shinto experience, Fushimi Inari-taisha with its thousands of vermilion torii gates is an absolute must-see – allow a good few hours to hike up! For Buddhist serenity, Kiyomizu-dera Temple offers stunning views, especially at sunset. Remember to observe proper etiquette: remove your shoes before entering certain areas, and be respectful during prayer ceremonies. The OCR mentioned "Shinto Shrines & PRAYER AREAS TRAVEL TIPS", so these are key points. Don't forget that many temples have beautiful gardens, perfect for peaceful reflection. More on Kyoto's Culinary Delights (Beyond Matcha!): While Matcha Tastings are undoubtedly a Kyoto specialty (and yes, I tried everything from matcha ice cream to lattes!), don't limit your culinary adventures. Kyoto is famous for its traditional Japanese cuisine, known as *Kyo-ryori*. Think delicate kaiseki dinners, hearty yudofu (boiled tofu), and delicious street food at Nishiki Market, often called 'Kyoto's Kitchen'. Trying a traditional wagashi (Japanese sweet) with your matcha is also an essential experience. Experiencing Geisha Culture: Though I didn't personally attend a Geisha Show, I did spend some time exploring the Gion district in the early evening. This historic area is where you might catch a glimpse of a geiko (Kyoto dialect for geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha) on their way to appointments. Even without a formal show, simply walking through Gion's charming streets and admiring the traditional architecture provides a wonderful atmosphere. If you do plan to attend a show, booking in advance is advisable, especially for popular ones like the Gion Corner performances, which offer a taste of various traditional arts. Best Time to Visit & Packing Tips: Kyoto is beautiful year-round, but spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (fall foliage) are particularly popular. Keep in mind that these seasons also mean more crowds. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter brings a quiet beauty, sometimes with snow. Regarding packing, comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable! Also, layered clothing is always a good idea, as temperatures can change, especially if you're out from morning till evening.
