Honfu Temple Water Hall

Honfukuji Mizumido is a new main hall of Honfukuji Temple, a temple of the Shingon sect Omuro school in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is known as a modern reinforced concrete building built in 1991 by the world-famous architect Tadao Ando.
Architecture and attractions
The roof is a large circular lotus pond that appears when you go through the concrete wall of the main hall under the lotus pond, and there is the main hall (Buddhist Room) when you go down the stairs in the center. It is characterized by a fantastic space that seems to go back and forth between this world and the other world.
Production of light The interior of the main hall is enveloped in light from the vermilion lattice, and you can enjoy a different atmosphere depending on the time of day.
The best time to see the lotus The lotus pond is blooming with Oga lotus and water lily, and the best time to see them is from May to September.
Scenery Located on a small hill, you can see Osaka Bay from the precincts.

私が本福寺水御堂（淡路島）でいちばん印象に残ったのは、「到着してすぐがピーク」じゃなくて、境内に入ってからじわじわ気持ちが切り替わっていくところでした。安藤忠雄さんらしいコンクリートの壁に沿って歩いていると、外の景色や音が少しずつ遮られていって、視界が狭まる分だけ意識が内側に向く感じ。観光というより“整う”に近い空気でした。 水御堂の見どころは、やっぱり蓮池の存在感。上から見ると大きな円形の水面で、写真だと静かに見えるのに、実際は風や光で表情が変わります。蓮の季節（5〜9月頃）は特に綺麗で、花があると水面の印象が一気に柔らかくなるので、同じ場所でも季節で別物だと思いました。逆に蓮が少ない時期でも、水面が“屋根”になっている構造自体が面白いので建築目的ならいつ行っても満足できます。 階段を降りて本堂へ入る瞬間は、まさに「水御堂」という名前に納得。地上の明るさから、少しひんやりした空間へ切り替わっていく体感がありました。本堂内部は朱色の格子が印象的で、光が差し込む時間帯によって雰囲気が変わります。私が行った時は昼寄りで、くっきりした影が出てグラフィカル。夕方寄りだともっと柔らかくなると思うので、時間に余裕があれば午前と午後で見比べるのも良さそうです。 アクセス面は、車だと東浦ICから近くて行きやすい一方、公共交通はバス＋徒歩なので、暑い時期は水分必須。境内は静かに過ごす人が多いので、歩きやすい靴で“観光地のテンション”を少し落として行くと馴染みます。 写真のコツは、蓮池は真正面から全体を撮るだけじゃなく、階段の直線と円形の水面が一緒に入る角度を探すこと。コンクリートの無機質さと、水面・朱色の対比が「本福寺・水御堂」らしさとして残りました。淡路の本福寺は短時間でも満足度が高いので、淡路島ドライブの寄り道にもおすすめです。
