Lake Biwa
Lake Biwa is Japan's largest and oldest freshwater lake located in the center of Shiga Prefecture.
It is one of the world's leading "ancient lakes" with a history of about 4 million years, with its own ecosystem, numerous tourist attractions and rich leisure culture.

Water storage capacity: 27.5 billion cubic meters (the largest amount of water in Japan)

Main features: With the Biwako Ohashi Bridge as the boundary, it is divided into Hokko (North Lake) on the north side and Nanko (South Lake) on the south side. North Lake is deep and has high transparency, while South Lake has a different property of being shallow.
私が初めて琵琶湖を訪れた際、その広さと自然の多様性に感動しました。琵琶湖は約670平方キロメートルもあり、滋賀県の面積の約6分の1を占めています。特に印象的だったのは、琵琶湖大橋を境に分かれる北湖と南湖の違いです。北湖は水深もあり透明度が高いため、カヤックやSUP（スタンドアップパドルボード）を楽しむ人が多く見られ、自然の美しさを満喫できます。 一方で、南湖は浅いため子供連れのファミリーに人気があり、水遊びや釣りに最適です。私も友人と一緒に釣りを楽しみ、地元の新鮮な魚を味わった思い出があります。琵琶湖の周囲は約235キロメートルもあり、湖畔のサイクリングロードやハイキングコースも充実しているため、季節ごとに異なる景色を楽しむことができます。 歴史的には約400万年の古代湖として、日本国内のみならず世界的にも貴重な生態系を保っています。希少な生き物や植物にも出会えるため、自然観察好きにはたまらないスポットです。私も写真が趣味ですが、琵琶湖周辺では四季折々の野鳥や植物の美しい瞬 間を撮影できました。 さらに、琵琶湖は日本一の貯水量を誇り（約275億立方メートル）、地元の生活や農業にも欠かせない存在です。こうした自然と人の暮らしが共存する地域は、訪れるたびに新たな発見があります。琵琶湖での体験は、自然の偉大さと癒やしを実感させてくれるので、ぜひ多くの人に訪れてほしい場所だと感じています。
