Most hikers fear wildlife…but the stuff that actually ruins hikes (and sends people to urgent care) is way more common.

These are the 5 highest probability trail dangers most hikers will deal with eventually, and what to do about them:

1) Ticks

Tiny, easy to miss, and not something you want to ignore. Permethrin treated clothing helps, and if one attaches: fine-tip tweezers, pull straight out. Follow CDC guidance for further instruction

2) Severe Sunburn

Cloudy days still burn. Reflection off rock, sand, and snow makes it worse.

If you’re already red, you waited too long.

3) Dehydration (the silent performance crash)

You don’t always feel thirsty early or in the cold, but even mild dehydration can hurt endurance and decision making. Sip early, not when you’re parched.

4) Slips & Falls

Most serious hiking injuries aren’t dramatic…it’s one rushed step downhill. Slow down on loose terrain and treat the last mile like it matters.

5) Heat Illness (fastest true emergency)

Heat exhaustion can escalate quickly. If you feel dizzy, confused, stop sweating, or get chills in heat: shade, cooling, fluids, stop immediately.

And if you missed my other trail tips, they’re on my feed:

... Read moreFrom my own hiking experiences, I’ve found that being prepared for these common dangers makes a huge difference in safety and enjoyment on the trail. Ticks are more than just a nuisance; they can carry diseases like Lyme disease. I always wear permethrin-treated clothing and do a thorough full-body tick check after every hike, paying special attention to often-missed areas behind the knees and waistbands. Carrying fine-tip tweezers is a must for quick removal, following CDC guidelines closely. Sunburn is often underestimated, especially on cloudy days or at higher elevations where UV rays are stronger and reflect off surfaces like rocks or snow. One time, I skipped reapplying sunscreen during a cloudy mountain hike and ended up severely sunburned. Now I use SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves, and reapply throughout the day to protect my skin. Dehydration sneaks up on many hikers, often impairing physical and mental performance before thirst sets in. On cold or cloudy days, you might not feel thirsty, but sipping water consistently is key. I also monitor my urine color and sweat rate as helpful signs. Carrying electrolyte-rich drinks can prevent both dehydration and muscle cramps. Slips and falls commonly happen on loose or uneven terrain, often near the end of a hike when we’re tired. I consciously slow my pace, use trekking poles for balance, and shorten my steps on tricky terrain. Treating that last mile with caution is crucial to avoid injury. Finally, heat illness is the quickest emergency hikers can face. Early signs like dizziness, confusion, or sudden chills mean it’s time to stop immediately, find shade, and cool down with fluids and electrolyte replacements. I always listen to my body closely, take frequent breaks, and avoid hiking in extreme heat whenever possible. I hope these personal insights help you stay safer on your next outdoor adventure. Sharing these tips with hiking friends can also make a big difference for everyone’s wellbeing on the trail.

Most people who get surprised by wildlife weren’t unprepared. #ad They were underprepared. There’s a difference. Knowing what to do in a bear encounter is step one. Actually having the tool to do it is step two. Most hikers nail step one and skip step two entirely. Bear spray isn’t
