After the Utah murders, I received more DMs than I can count. Some saying this is exactly why women shouldn’t hike alone, while others said they’re now afraid to hike alone at all.

That’s why I felt compelled to share this. First, the obvious: the person responsible is a scumbag who deserves zero attention here. This post isn’t about him. It’s about helping hikers prepare the best they can.

Millions of people hike safely every year. But smart hikers stack the odds in their favor. Here are 5 safety habits every solo hiker should know.

1. Share your plan. Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Send a trail map or GPS pin if possible.

2. Carry more water than you think you need. Dehydration contributes to thousands of rescue calls every year in U.S. parks. A simple rule: bring extra and do a quick “pee check” on longer hikes.

3. Trust your instincts early. If something feels off, whether it’s a person, situation, or location, create distance immediately. Situational awareness is one of the most powerful safety tools you have.

4. Make yourself visible and audible. A whistle carries much farther than your voice. Bright clothing, headlamps, and reflective gear make it easier for rescuers to locate you if needed.

5. Carry basic emergency gear. The “Ten Essentials” exist for a reason: navigation, light, insulation, first aid, fire starter, repair tools, food, water, and emergency shelter.

The reality is the outdoors is overwhelmingly safe, but evil people exist everywhere. We shouldn’t respond to that by shrinking our world. We respond by being prepared, aware, and looking out for each other.
