Save this before your next hike 👇

Some hiking advice gets repeated so often people assume it must be true.

It’s not.

And sometimes it’s not just wrong; it can put you in bad situations.

A few examples:

“Just drink when you’re thirsty.”

That can be too late, especially in heat, altitude, or on long efforts.

“Cotton is fine.”

Not when it gets wet, cold, or windy. Cotton holds moisture and can make you miserable fast.

“You don’t need extra layers if it’s hot.”

Until the winds hit the ridge, your pace slows down, or you stop moving for longer than expected.

“Just go downhill if you’re lost.”

That can lead you into cliffs, poison oak, private property, or terrain that’s way worse than where you started.

And maybe the biggest one:

“If something feels off, you’re overreacting.”

Nope. Trusting your instincts early is one of the smartest things a hiker can do.

A lot of hiking is just reducing small mistakes before they become big ones.

... Read moreFrom my personal hiking experiences, I've come to realize how important it is to question common advice that many take for granted. For instance, the notion 'drink when you're thirsty' often caused me to underestimate my hydration needs during hot, strenuous hikes. Now, I make it a habit to drink regularly before thirst kicks in, especially at higher altitudes or in dry conditions. Regarding clothing, I once wore a cotton shirt on a chilly mountain morning. Within minutes of sweating, I was cold and uncomfortable because cotton clings to moisture and loses insulation when wet. Switching to synthetic or wool layers has made all the difference in staying warm and dry. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so even on hot days, I always carry at least one extra layer. There was a time when unexpected wind chills forced me to stop and put on a fleece, which prevented what could have been hypothermia. When I got off trail once, thinking I could head downhill to safety, I ended up near thick poison oak and steep cliffs—clearly a mistake. Staying put and using a GPS or retracing steps cautiously is a smarter option. Most importantly, never ignore your instincts. If a situation or person feels off, trust yourself and take action early. On one hike, sensing danger early helped me avoid an unsafe encounter. Overall, hiking safely is about preparation and respecting small warnings before they escalate. I recommend everyone learn and practice these tips to enjoy the trails confidently and safely.
