Candle Making Terms

common candle making terms for beginners!

2025/11/11 Edited to

... Read moreIf you're new to candle making, understanding specialized terms can greatly improve your crafting experience and the quality of your candles. For instance, the 'vessel' refers to the container that holds the candle, which can affect the burn rate and scent throw. Speaking of 'throw,' this term is divided into 'hot throw' and 'cold throw'; hot throw describes the fragrance strength while the candle is burning, whereas cold throw relates to the scent strength when the candle is unlit. 'Burn time' is crucial for candle makers to estimate how long their candles will last before the wax is entirely used. This directly relates to factors like wick size and wax type. The 'melt pool' refers to the liquid wax that forms as the candle burns, and managing it properly ensures an even burn without tunneling—where the candle burns down the middle and leaves wax on the sides. You might notice 'mushrooming,' a condition where a carbon cap forms on the wick resembling a mushroom, which should be trimmed for optimal performance. 'Sinkholes' and 'wet spots' are imperfections that can happen during cooling; these are dips or patches where the wax has pulled away from the glass or failed to set evenly. 'Cure time' is the period needed after pouring wax and fragrance to allow the candle to properly bind, affecting scent throw and burn quality. The 'melt point' is the temperature at which the wax begins to liquify, important when choosing pouring and cooling temperatures, referred to collectively as 'pour temperature.' Lastly, 'fragrance load' is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the wax weight, which is important because too much can cause issues like flash points (where fragrance oils ignite near an open flame). Understanding and monitoring these terms can help beginners craft candles that look, smell, and burn beautifully while avoiding common pitfalls. Choosing the right vessel, managing wick trimming, and allowing adequate cure time are simple yet effective ways to elevate your candle making hobby.
