Rush terms to know and what they mean

There are a lot of terms that people will use during sorority Recruitment and if you don’t know somebody close to you, that’s been through it before it can all be kind of confusing so I wanted to define some of the common terms!!

Knowing these will just help when people are explaining things to give a little bit more context because there’s just a lot going on during the rush time/ after.

The most important thing to say, though is that I found that girls and your recruitment counselors are extremely helpful so if there is anything that you’re confused about, just ask because most people want to make sure that you have the best experience possible!!!

... Read moreHey everyone! When I first went through sorority recruitment, I felt like I was learning a whole new language. It's totally normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the unique 'rush terms' flying around. But trust me, understanding them makes the entire 'sorority selection process' so much clearer and less stressful. That's why I wanted to share a deeper dive into some of these key phrases and give you some extra context! One of the biggest parts of the 'sorority selection process' involves 'ROUNDS.' These aren't just random parties; they're structured events designed for you to get to know each chapter and for them to get to know you. You'll typically start with open house rounds, then move to philanthropy events where you learn about a sorority's charitable work, sisterhood rounds focused on their bond, and finally, preference round, which is usually the most emotional and formal. Each round helps both sides decide if it's the right fit. It's truly a mutual selection process, so don't feel like you're just being judged – you're evaluating them too! Let's talk about 'PI CHI/ RHO GAM.' These amazing women are your recruitment counselors, and seriously, they are your lifeline during rush! Their 'meaning' and role are crucial: they've disaffiliated from their own chapters to guide 'PNMS' (Potential New Members) through recruitment. They can't tell you which sorority to join, but they can offer unbiased advice, answer all your burning questions, and be a shoulder to cry on. I remember my Pi Chi was incredibly supportive, helping me process my feelings after each round. Don't hesitate to lean on them! The ultimate goal for many 'PNMS' is receiving a 'BID' – an invitation to join a sorority. This usually happens on Bid Day, a super exciting moment! But what if you don't receive a bid, or withdraw from recruitment? Don't worry, there's also 'COB' (Continuous Open Bidding). This means some sororities, like perhaps an amazing chapter such as 'DELTA ZETA' (just an example!), might still be able to offer bids to 'PNMS' even after formal recruitment ends, until they reach their chapter's initiation quota. It's a less formal process but just as valid for finding your sisterhood. Beyond the terms, the 'sorority meaning' really boils down to finding a community where you belong, grow, and contribute. It's about sisterhood, leadership opportunities, and philanthropy, creating lifelong friendships. My biggest tip? Be yourself, ask questions, and trust your gut. This 'RUSH TERMS EXPLAINED' guide is just the beginning; the real magic happens when you connect with people. Good luck, future sisters!
