... Read moreHey curl friends! You know my journey of embracing my wild curls, and lately, I've been diving deep into mastering S-curl styles, especially for those of us with shorter hair or thinking of going for the chop! It's all part of that beautiful, untangling, and glowing healing journey I've been on. For a long time, I thought S-curls were just for long, flowing hair, but let me tell you, they bring incredible life and bounce to shorter lengths too.
So, what exactly are S-curls? They're those lovely, natural-looking wavy or curly strands that form a distinct 'S' shape. They're typically looser than tight coils but more defined than a simple wave. When you rock S-curls on short hair, you get this amazing volume and texture that can elevate any look. My own curly brown hair, which usually has its own mind, really comes alive with this pattern. It's fantastic for adding definition without sacrificing body, and it makes my natural highlights pop in such a gorgeous way!
Getting those perfect S-curls on short hair starts with a good foundation. First, make sure your hair is clean and well-conditioned. I always use a sulfate-free shampoo and a rich conditioner to keep my strands hydrated, then detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is still in. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticles.
Now for the fun part: styling! Here are a few ways I’ve found to 'fake' my S-curls and really make them shine on a shorter cut:
Finger Coiling: This is my go-to for defined S-curls. After applying a leave-in conditioner and a light curl cream to damp hair, take small sections. Starting from the root, wrap each section around your finger, twirling it downwards to create an S-shape. Hold for a few seconds, then release. Repeat this all over your head. It takes patience, but the results are worth it!
Denman Brush Technique: For a slightly looser S-pattern, a Denman brush can be a lifesaver. Apply your styling products, then brush sections of your hair, twisting your wrist as you pull the brush through. This encourages the hair to clump into S-shapes.
Pin Curling for Extra Definition: If you want really lasting S-curls on your short hair, pin curling is your friend. After applying products, create small sections and finger coil each one. Then, instead of just letting it hang, roll the coiled section up to your scalp and secure it with a duckbill clip or bobby pin. Let your hair air dry completely or use a diffuser on low heat. Once dry, carefully unpin for beautiful, bouncy S-curls. This technique is amazing for showing off different layers in your short style.
Mini Curling Wand (Carefully!): For quick touch-ups or to enhance specific S-curls, a small barrel curling wand on low heat can work wonders. Just wrap small sections around the wand, release, and gently stretch the curl to create that S-shape. Always use a heat protectant!
Once your S-curls are set, it’s all about maintaining them. Sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a satin bonnet to protect your curls overnight. In the mornings, if they need a refresh, I use a spray bottle with water and a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner, then gently scrunch. Don't be afraid to fluff your roots for extra volume!
Rocking S-curls on short hair is not just about the hair; it’s about the attitude. It’s about feeling confident and stylish. I love pairing my freshly styled S-curls with my favorite cat-eye glasses for a chic, put-together look, or just a simple black top for an effortlessly cool vibe. This journey of embracing and faking my curls, learning what works for my hair, and finding styles like S-curls for my length has truly been empowering. It’s a continuous process of untangling and glowing, and I hope these tips help you on your own amazing curl adventure!
It looks so good. You go girl 😏😍
