... Read moreSo glad you're planning a trip to Edinburgh! After my unforgettable visit, I can confirm it's absolutely one of the most beautiful and historic cities I've ever explored. My original post just scratched the surface with a list of incredible spots, but I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why these places are truly must-sees and share some extra tips from my own adventure. First up, Calton Hill. Oh my goodness, the views from here are breathtaking! It's an easy walk up, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the city, including Edinburgh Castle, the Firth of Forth, and Arthur's Seat. I went at sunset, and it was pure magic – definitely bring your camera! You'll see the National Monument and Nelson Monument standing tall, making it a great spot for some iconic photos. Then there's the lively Grassmarket area. It's not just a historic marketplace; it's bursting with character, great pubs, and independent shops. I loved soaking up the atmosphere and imagining the history that unfolded there. Just a stone's throw away is Victoria Street, a truly picturesque, curving street with colorful storefronts that looks straight out of a fairytale. It's often said to be an inspiration for Diagon Alley, and walking down it, I could totally see why! No trip to Edinburgh is complete without exploring the Royal Mile. This historic stretch connects Edinburgh Castle at one end to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other. It's packed with history, street performers, and unique souvenir shops. Take your time to wander, pop into the side closes (alleys), and discover hidden gems. Don't miss St. Giles' Cathedral along the Royal Mile – its stunning architecture and peaceful interior offer a moment of reflection amidst the bustling street. Speaking of history, Edinburgh Castle truly dominates the skyline. It's an absolute powerhouse of Scottish history, and I recommend booking tickets in advance to save time. Give yourself at least 2-3 hours to explore everything from the Crown Jewels to Mons Meg. And while you're in the area, a quick detour to see Greyfriars Bobby statue is a heartwarming stop – the story behind it is so touching. If you're into museums, the National Museum of Scotland is fantastic and has something for everyone, from Scottish history to natural world exhibits. I spent a good few hours there and could have easily spent more! For a completely different vibe, make your way to Dean Village. It's a tranquil oasis just a short walk from the city center, with charming old buildings and a lovely riverside path. It felt like stepping into another world, so peaceful and picturesque. And for a bit of literary history and amazing city views, the Scott Monument is an impressive Gothic spire dedicated to Sir Walter Scott. You can even climb to the top for more incredible perspectives! Beyond these specific spots, my general tip for Edinburgh is to wear comfortable shoes – it's a very walkable city, but there are lots of hills and cobblestones! Also, embrace the local food scene, from haggis (if you're brave!) to delicious shortbread. Enjoy your adventure in this magical Scottish capital!
