Tip to remember the waxing and waning moon

2025/1/27 Edited to

... Read moreI used to always struggle with remembering the difference between a waxing and a waning moon. It felt like no matter how many diagrams I saw, I'd still mix them up when I looked up at the sky, especially when trying to align my intentions with the moon's energy. That's why I was so excited when I discovered this incredibly simple hand method! It’s not just a visual cue; it’s a whole framework that really deepened my understanding of moon magic. The basic idea, as you might have seen, is to hold your hands in front of you completely flat and then curve them to form a ‘C’ and a backward C. This instantly helps you identify the shape of the crescent moons. But what truly clicked for me was understanding the deeper meaning tied to each hand in witchcraft and how that mirrors the moon's energy. Let's start with the waxing moon. When you make that backward C shape with your right hand, it's a perfect match for the waxing crescent. In many spiritual traditions, the right hand is your action hand. It's about doing, growth, change in progress. And isn't that exactly what the waxing moon is all about? As the moon grows from new to full, it's a time of increasing light and energy. For me, this is when I focus on setting new intentions, starting projects, and drawing things into my life. It’s the perfect phase for manifesting abundance, cultivating personal growth, and actively working towards my goals. I’ve found that any ritual or spell work aimed at bringing something to you or increasing something is super potent during this time. Think about planting seeds, both literally and metaphorically! Now, for the waning moon. When you form a regular ‘C’ shape with your left hand, you’ll see it perfectly matches the waning crescent. Your left hand in witchcraft is your receiving hand, but it's also associated with undoing, hex removal, releasing, and letting go. This really resonates with the energy of the waning moon. As the moon fades from full back to new, its light decreases, signaling a time for release and introspection. This is my go-to phase for clearing out clutter, both physical and energetic. It’s ideal for banishing negative habits, letting go of emotional baggage, or releasing what no longer serves my highest good. I often use this time for shadow work, divination, or simply reflecting on what I need to purge from my life to make space for new growth. It’s like clearing the canvas before you start a new painting. Beyond just the hand trick for remembering the shapes, really internalizing these associations with your hands and their magical uses has been incredibly empowering. It transformed my moon tracking from a simple observation into a deeply intuitive practice. Now, when I see the moon in the sky, I don't just see a shape; I immediately feel its energy—whether it's time to push forward and manifest, or to gently release and prepare for renewal. I encourage you to try this method and see how it deepens your own connection to the moon's powerful cycles!
