Two of my Favorite Ships (wrecked)

When we talk about historic shipwrecks, the stories of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and the steamboat Pulaski stand out not only for their tragic ends but also for their significance in maritime history. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, often remembered as the largest ship to have sunk on the Great Lakes, tragically sank in a severe storm on Lake Superior in 1975, claiming all 29 crew members aboard. Its loss remains a somber reminder of the power of nature and the challenges of navigating the Great Lakes. Similarly, the steamboat Pulaski's story is both gripping and heartbreaking. In June 1838, after embarking passengers from Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, the Pulaski set course for Baltimore, Maryland. Around 10 p.m., roughly 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina, the starboard boiler exploded in the dark, moderate weather. This catastrophic explosion destroyed part of the ship's midsection and caused severe casualties through both scalding and drowning. Despite valiant efforts by the crew, including the lowering of lifeboats, the disaster resulted in the loss of approximately 128 lives, with 59 survivors. Both ships are remembered for the human stories behind their wrecks, reflecting themes of bravery, tragedy, and the relentless force of nature at sea. Today, these wrecks serve as important historical sites and a source of fascination for ship enthusiasts, historians, and divers alike. Exploring their stories helps us appreciate maritime safety advancements and the enduring spirit of those who navigate our waters.
