Maple Tree To Asian Inspired Soup Bowl
I made this Asian inspired soup bowl after eating at a local Japanese restaurant. The bowls and utensils were so beautifully made. The restaurant owner said he brought them with him from Japan.
I decided to have a go at it and the result is pictured above. I used hard maple since I already had some dried down to 8% moisture content. The bowl and lid were turned from a single maple block. The spoon was roughed out on a bandsaw then hand carved to shape.
The maple was dyed with black Keyda dye and then lots of coats of lacquer. Traditional Japanese lacquer is made from a relative of poison ivy and very expensive. This is for display only, so I used an off the shelf lacquer.
