screen-free activities for the witching hour

Real talk from a former preschool teacher: 5pm is the witching hour for a reason. Everyone's tired, dinner isn't ready, and the screen starts calling your name. After years of running a classroom of toddlers through that exact dinner-prep chaos, here are 5 screen-free resets that actually buy you 20 minutes of calm. 1) Calm-down jar, warm water plus a squeeze of glitter glue, the slow swirl helps them breathe and reset. 2) Frozen-spaghetti scoop, cold slippery sensory play that builds pencil-grip muscles. 3) Tape a road on the floor, add toy cars, spatial planning and pretend play, peels up with no damage. 4) Color hunt, call a color and send them racing to match it. 5) Pillow-jump countdown to burn the last of the wiggles. Educational content from a teacher, not medical advice. Which one are you trying at 5pm tonight? Tell me below. 👇

... Read moreAs a parent juggling the evening chaos, I’ve found these screen-free activities to be literal lifesavers during what’s known as the 'witching hour' around 5pm. This is the time when kids are tired and restless but dinner isn’t quite ready, making it tempting to rely on screens. However, introducing activities such as the calm-down jar—a visual sensory tool using warm water and glitter glue—can be incredibly soothing. Watching the glitter slowly settle helps little ones focus on their breathing and self-regulate emotions. Another favorite in our household is the frozen spaghetti scoop. Cooking and freezing spaghetti in advance offers a cold, slippery sensory play option that strengthens fine motor skills vital for pencil grip development. Plus, it’s a fun tactile experience that's rarely messy and instantly captivating. Creating a DIY tape road on the floor engages kids’ spatial planning and imaginative play skills as they race toy cars along winding tracks. This activity not only entertains but strengthens cognitive abilities and encourages movement. The color hunt game is excellent for pre-dinner energy release while enriching vocabulary. Calling out colors for children to find around the house adds a lively, educational sprint before the evening wind-down. Lastly, pillow-jump countdowns serve as a playful way to burn off excess energy with a set endpoint, building anticipation for dinner without the fuss. Incorporating these screen-free resets regularly has made our family's evenings calmer and more connected. It’s amazing how a few simple tools and a bit of creativity can turn the witching hour from chaos to calm. If you try any of these, you’ll likely notice your child’s mood and cooperation improve right before mealtime—a shared win for parents and kids alike.
