Newborn care every parent should know

1/28 Edited to

... Read moreOne important practice I found essential for newborn care is choosing the right sleeping surface. Contrary to the common belief of keeping babies on soft bedding to help them grow comfortably, a firm mattress is best for their spine development and safety. Soft beds can increase the risk of suffocation, which is why I always ensure my baby rests on a firm, flat surface. To support my baby's early development, I also incorporated tummy time from the very first months. Starting with short sessions of 10 to 30 seconds twice daily helped strengthen neck and shoulder muscles, laying the groundwork for milestones like rolling over and crawling. It’s amazing to see how this simple activity can contribute to muscle strength. Visual development is another key area I focused on. Using high-contrast black and white pictures during awake periods kept my newborn engaged and helped stimulate their vision, since these images are easier for babies to focus on. Lastly, monitoring sleep was vital. Newborns need 16 to 20 hours of sleep daily for growth and brain development. Paying close attention to their tired cues — rubbing eyes or fussiness — helped me put my baby down for naps at the right times, ensuring they rested well. Overall, less stimulation paired with attentive connection and safe environments made those first months special and supported my baby's health and development effectively.
