Spiral Perm
My most performed salon service is the spiral perm. Perms aren’t the way they used to be now you can get shampooed at the end of your service.
As a hairstylist, my passion is helping people fall in love with their hair, and one of the most exciting services I offer is the modern spiral perm. Forget everything you thought you knew about perms from the 80s! The world of perms has evolved dramatically, and I’m here to tell you all about it. Many of my clients come in wondering, 'what is a spiral perm?' Simply put, a spiral perm creates beautiful, bouncy, and often elongated curls that spiral down the hair shaft, mimicking natural curl patterns. Unlike traditional perms where hair is wrapped horizontally, a spiral perm involves wrapping the hair in vertical or near-vertical sections around long, slender rods. This technique is what gives you those gorgeous, cascading ringlets, whether you're looking for a loose spiral perm or a tighter corkscrew perm. One common question I get is, 'spiral perm vs regular perm?' The main distinction, as mentioned, is the wrapping method. Regular perms typically use smaller, horizontal rollers to create uniform waves closer to the head, often resulting in a more uniform or 'set' look. Spiral perms, on the other hand, are designed to give a more natural, elongated, and voluminous curl from root to tip, making them perfect for those desiring a 'loose perm' or a more natural, beachy vibe. The beauty of a modern perm is that it’s not just about the curl, but also about the health of your hair. Today's perm solutions are much gentler than they used to be, minimizing damage and allowing for more natural-looking results. And yes, you absolutely can get shampooed at the end of your service! This was a huge game-changer for clients who remember the strict 'no washing for 48 hours' rule of the past. I've done countless spiral perms for long hair, creating stunning transformations with voluminous curls that frame the face beautifully. For those with medium hair, a loose spiral perm can add incredible body and texture without sacrificing length. We can even tailor the look, perhaps a shoulder-length corkscrew spiral perm for a playful bounce, or a sophisticated spiral perm with straight bangs for a chic contrast. The possibilities are truly endless depending on your hair length and desired aesthetic. Now, let’s talk about 'how to take care of a spiral perm' – because proper aftercare is key to keeping those curls looking their best. Gentle Cleansing: Opt for sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for curly or chemically treated hair. Sulfates can strip your hair of moisture, leading to frizz. Conditioning is Crucial: Deep condition regularly. Permed hair tends to be drier, so a good conditioner will help maintain hydration and elasticity. Hands Off (Mostly): Avoid brushing your hair when it’s dry, as this can disrupt the curl pattern and cause frizz. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle when your hair is wet and saturated with conditioner. Embrace Air Drying or Diffusing: After washing, gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel (avoid rough towel drying!). Apply a curl-defining cream or mousse, then let your hair air dry, or use a diffuser on a low heat setting for added volume and definition. Protect Your Curls Overnight: Sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wrapping your hair in a silk scarf can help prevent frizz and preserve your curls while you sleep. Seeing the 'spiral perm before and after' is always my favorite part of the process. It's truly amazing how a few hours in the salon can completely transform someone’s look, adding volume, texture, and a style that’s easy to manage. If you're considering a change and dreaming of beautiful, lasting curls, a modern spiral perm might just be your next favorite hair adventure!
