4 Things I Wish I Knew Before Getting a Perm

day 1 of trying to take care of her perm as someone who naturally has always had pin straight hair

Huntsville
2025/1/22 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first decided to swap my pin-straight hair for bouncy spiral curls, I knew it would be a change, but I truly underestimated the learning curve. My initial article touched on the immediate shock and the realization that perm care isn't just a walk in the park. Now that I've been on this curly hair journey for a while, I've gathered even more insights that I wish someone had shared with me. So, if you're thinking about diving into the world of perms, here’s a deeper dive into making the most of your new look, beyond just the first few days! First things first, don't just walk into any salon and ask for "a perm." The type of perm you get makes a huge difference, and a thorough consultation with your stylist is non-negotiable. I learned that there are various types – from tight spiral perms like mine to looser wavy perms or even just body perms for added volume. Discuss your desired outcome, your hair's history (especially if you've had color treatments or, as some queries suggest, relaxed hair), and your stylist can advise on what’s best for your hair length and type. They should assess your hair's health; if it's too damaged, a perm might not be a good idea, as it could lead to breakage. My stylist helped me understand that a spiral perm would give me the defined curls I craved, but it also meant a specific wrapping technique and processing time. Before your appointment, focus on getting your hair in its best possible condition. Deep conditioning treatments in the weeks leading up to your perm can make a huge difference in how your hair takes and holds the curl. After the perm, the real work (and fun!) begins. Beyond just "scheduling your washes," mastering wash day is an art. I found that using lukewarm water is key, and a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo is non-negotiable. Sulfates can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and, yes, more frizz! When conditioning, really work the product through your curls, detangling gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. A weekly deep conditioning treatment became my secret weapon for maintaining moisture and elasticity. Styling isn't just about applying product; it's about technique. After washing, I gently scrunch out excess water with a microfiber towel (never rub!). Then, I apply my styling products – usually a leave-in conditioner, followed by a curl cream or a frizz-taming cream and then a gel for hold. I apply these using the "praying hands" method or by scrunching upwards. Drying is another crucial step. Air drying is great if you have time, but diffusing on a low heat and low speed setting helps set the curls without creating excessive frizz. Your perm isn't just for wash day. Overnight care is essential for preserving your spiral perm. I quickly invested in a silk pillowcase and a silk bonnet to protect my curls from friction while I sleep, which helps prevent frizz and maintain definition. In between washes, if my curls start to look a little limp or frizzy, I use a curl refreshing spray – usually just water mixed with a little leave-in conditioner – to reactivate them. Remember, perms are beautiful, but they're a commitment. They don't just "define and defrizz themselves." Expect to spend time on your hair, especially if you're used to straight hair. A perm typically lasts anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on your hair type and how well you care for it. You might need touch-ups on new growth, but always consult your stylist. Embracing permed hair has been a journey of trial and error, but it's been incredibly rewarding. While it requires different products, new routines, and a bit more patience, seeing those beautiful, bouncy curls every day makes it all worth it. Don't be afraid to experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best for your hair. You'll truly be obsessed with your new look!
