Here’s an easy (how to propagate your kalanchoes)

2024/10/22 Edited to

... Read moreI remember the first time I tried propagating a Kalanchoe, or Flaming Katy as it's often called. I was so nervous, but it turned out to be one of the easiest and most rewarding plant projects I've ever tackled! If you're looking to expand your plant collection without spending a fortune, or just want to share your favorite plant with friends, propagating Kalanchoe plants is definitely the way to go. It's truly amazing to watch a tiny piece of a plant transform into a thriving new one. My go-to method is often stem cuttings, especially after I've pruned my mature Kalanchoe plant. First, I look for a healthy, non-flowering stem, usually about 3-5 inches long. Using clean, sharp scissors (this is crucial to prevent disease!), I make a cut just below a leaf node. Then, I carefully remove the bottom leaves, leaving about two to three sets of leaves at the top. Here's a key tip I learned: don't plant it immediately! I let the cutting sit out for a couple of days to allow the cut end to 'callous over.' This helps prevent rot once it's in the soil. Once calloused, I simply insert the cutting into a pot filled with well-draining potting mix – a cactus or succulent blend works perfectly. I water it lightly and place it in a spot with bright, indirect light. It's incredible to see the progress; typically, *4 weeks later*, you'll start to feel some resistance when you gently tug, indicating new roots are forming! This initial rooting phase is just magical. Sometimes, just for fun or to watch the roots develop, I'll try water propagation with stem cuttings too. The preparation is pretty much the same: healthy stem, clean cut, remove lower leaves, and let it callous for a day or two. Then, I place the cutting in a jar of clean water, ensuring only the stem is submerged, not the leaves. I make sure to change the water every few days to keep it fresh and prevent bacterial growth. It's so exciting to see those white roots emerge! Once the roots are about an inch long, I carefully transfer the cutting to soil, just like with the direct soil method. Both ways work wonderfully, it just depends on your preference! While stem cuttings are faster, propagating Kalanchoe from a single leaf can also be incredibly rewarding, though it requires a bit more patience. This method works best for varieties like Kalanchoe pinnata or some succulent Kalanchoes. I pick a healthy, full leaf, twisting it gently from the main stem to ensure the entire base of the leaf is intact. Again, I let it callous for a few days. Then, I lay the leaf flat on top of a moist, well-draining soil mix, or sometimes I just barely insert the very base of the leaf into the soil. I keep the soil lightly moist with a gentle mist. This is where patience truly pays off! You might not see much happen for a while, but *about 3 months later*, tiny plantlets will start to emerge from the base or edges of the leaf. It's like magic, watching those miniature Kalanchoe plants form! After your Kalanchoe cuttings have rooted and started to grow, providing the right care is essential for them to thrive into beautiful Kalanchoe plants. They love bright, indirect sunlight, so a spot near a sunny window is ideal. Be careful not to overwater; I always let the soil dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot, as Kalanchoes are succulents. Consistency is key, but don't obsess – these plants are pretty forgiving! Seeing them grow from a small cutting into a lush, mature plant is such a wonderful experience, making all the effort worthwhile. Happy propagating!
